A question about tagging

I have been meaning to ask this for ages, but seeing as I have just done it to @Praefectus Praetorio, I thought I would chuck it out there as a general query. What happens when someone is tagged like that ( @ + username )? I have had it done to me several times, but I didn't get any sort of notification that I could see. Is it because I keep an eye on this site almost exclusively from email alerts, and the occasional check on 'What's new'? Is there a marker somewhere that I don't look that alerts one if one's username is tagged?

In my experience, such alerts are a bit unreliable, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't.
I use them on the Members' Birthdays thread, to let members know we've greeted them, I think they generally get through.
