This is one of the shortest and most brutal whipping scenes I have seen, featuring none other than Oprah Winfrey as the victim! From Beloved (1998), in which Oprah plays the role of Sethe, a former slave. The main story is set a decade after the Civil War, and the scene is a flashback to a whipping by her owner when she was a slave, which left her with a spectacular set of scars on her back.

Two images of the scars left on Sethe's back: Oprah in the movie, and a sketch by the novel's author, Toni Morrison. Presumably, there was more than the one lash we see in the clip!
