These Mandingo slaves are being herded aboard the Melania bound for New Orleans. Once there the pick of them will most likely be sold to the Hartley House plantation. The journey will be long and the accommodation can hardly be described as luxurious. Not a great deal can be said in favour of the meals either so it will hardly be a relaxing luxury cruise. I suppose that’s why some of the slaves have been held back so that they can receive a parting gift from their captors. Very thoughtful of them.

The last entries are from march. No news from Hartley House? Perhaps some white slaves ( m and f )as toys for the girls?

Here’s Felicity Starkadder again wielding the whip. As a plantation mistress she has many duties including giving the slaves lessons on how to pray and lead a religiously virtuous life like she did. Felicity took her duties seriously especially the supply of food for the slaves. The Juba (leftovers) were barely sufficient and the price of everything seemed to be going sky high except for the Starkadder’s main crop which was cotton. This was in low demand from the British mills and the price just kept going down. So what was she to do? Then she had an idea. If her slaves had learnt how to walk on two legs then she could retrain them to walk on four. She would train her neighbours’ spare slaves into becoming a household pet, for a fee of course. She sent out invitations to her slave owning friends to attend a picnic and demonstration in her grounds and afterwards a nice game of flicket perhaps.

I'm not convinced it's the best economic solution to low cotton prices, but at least she's trying. And she's keeping morale up at the same time.
