Historical Real Punishments

This thematic field is popular in graphic manipulation as well as in real life. Once in Google I accidentally found a photo report about the historically accurate simulation punishment of witches. The action took place in Prague , if I'm not mistaken , right on the street . There have been many pictures: executioner shave all body hair naked witch, makes her inspection, stretches it on the rack and others. Unfortunately I was distracted, I can not remember the link and since then and can not find this photo report.

Below are the 3D works KajiraGames. For each work she applies a short historical background , which I also left.

Princess Alute of China was beaten while pregnant by her mother-in-law, Empress Tzu-Hsi "the Dragon Lady". As Dowager Empress, she would lose power when an heir came of age, so she didn't want one to be born yet. Thus she used bamboo caning as an abortion technique. Tzu-Hsi also caned all the eunuch servants in the Forbidden City of Beijing, at her slightest whim.

The Countess of Buchan organized the crowning of Robert the Bruce as King of Scotland, using her husband's resources without his knowledge. When Edward Longshanks of England overthrew Robert, the Countess was imprisoned in a cage and shown off to all dignitaries visiting Berwick-on-Tweed.

Anne Askew was put on the rack in the Tower of London, for Protestant agitation at a time when the elderly King Henry the Eighth was leaning back toward Catholicism. Bishop Fisher hoped she would implicate Henry's last queen, Catherine Parr.
Anne was later burnt at the stake, wearing bags of gunpowder to make her death mercifully quicker.

A nun in the order of Barefoot Carmelites, Saint Teresa had a strong preference for being birched, by herself and others. She frequently chastised the other nuns too. She is also depicted in Bernini's sculpture "The Ecstasy of St Teresa" having what Dan Brown calls a 'toe-curling orgasm' (in "Angels & Demons"). What Dan doesn't say is that according to Teresa's writings, the ecstasy was caused by an angel inflicting pain on her.
Here she is taking her turn in a group penance. You can't mortify the flesh without revealing it, right? This picture could just as well depict several other saints from convents: "Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor" - "Purge me, Lord, with hyssop (a spiky plant) and I shall be clean". All masochists form a queue (behind me).

Marie was the niece of the Mayor of Bruges, Belgium. Her confessor was Father Cornelius Adriason, who customarily whipped young women half-naked for their sins. But he decided that Marie-Ann Leveque deserved an extra-special penance. He stripped her completely naked and after her whipping, she said, she felt something enter her 'shameful place'. A doctor confirmed her complaints, verifying whip marks and recent penetration. Fr Cornelius was removed from his post but no criminal charges were laid. Sound familiar?

An example of 'Peine Forte et Dure' in Protestant England. When Jane Wiseman refused to be tried by a jury for hiding a Catholic priest, it was ordered that she should be:
"stripped naked except for a linen cloth about the lower part of her body" and be laid on the ground. Then, "upon her body let there be placed as much stones and iron as she can bear and more."
It took a while before the worst thing to happen to a Catholic girl was getting the strap from the nuns!

The Deputy Bailiff of Tranent in Scotland became (he claimed) suspicious of his maid and decided to look for a "witch's mark" on her body - a point that did not feel pain. This was done with hot needles and involved examining every inch of skin, including the scalp.
No doubt the Bailiff had always wanted to see Gilly Duncan naked, and accusing her of witchcraft let him throw in a little torture as well. He couldn't normally touch those boobs and get away with it, but with the right excuse...

P.S. My technical oversights names of the images is incorrect. I apologies.

1629 Gotter Ness.jpg
During the witch trials in Germany, in 1629, a woman named Gotter Ness (one of many victims) was forced onto a metal seat over a fire. But she wouldn't confess to witchcraft. History doesn't record whether she was executed anyway. Those holy inquisitors - they were really fun guys!
1650 Susan Coles.jpg
In the mid-17th century according to the records of Hartford, Connecticut, a maidservant named Susan Coles was arraigned ‘for her rebellious cariedge towards her mistres’. Susan was sent to the house of correction, there to be ‘kept to hard labour and coarse dyet, to be brought forth the next lecture day to be publicquely corrected and so to be corrected weekly until order be given to the contrary.’ (Original spelling).
Some of the American colonies imported an English method of bondage for punishment called 'the Bilboes', intended to inflict maximum public humiliation on those punished. This weekly exposure and caning will teach Susan not to be cheeky to her Mistress!
1654 Barbara Blangdon.jpg
Respectable quaker Barbara Blangdon was brought before the Mayor of Great Torrington, in England. Quakers were a persecuted sect of 'heretics' and the parish priest urged that she should be whipped as a ‘vagabond’, since she was travelling around talking about Quakerism to anyone who would listen.
She was lodged in a filthy prison at Exeter and eventually sentenced to be flogged in 1654. The local parish beadle carried out the sentence with such zeal that the blood reportedly ran down the lady’s bared body in streams.
1657 Margery Riggs.jpg
Margery Riggs of the American colony of New Hampshire was whipped for "leading one George Palmer into sin". It's possible that the method called 'the bilboes' was used to secure her - its use is documented in New England as well as OLD England.
George was only put in the pillory for his (presumably symmetrical) part in the sin. You can almost hear the local clergy reading from Genesis: "And Adam replied 'The woman tempted me, and I did eat'." It was all her fault!
The way I've imagined it, George has to watch his illicit girlfriend being punished. I leave it to you whether this was a good or bad experience for him. It seems he was used to seeing her in this position!
1662 Three Quakers.jpg
The records of the Massachusetts colony of Puritans in America contain the following:
"To the constables of Dover, Hampton, Salisbury, Newberry, Rosley, Ipswich, Wennam, Lynn, Boston, Roxbury, Dedham, and until the vagabond Quakers are carried out of this jurisdiction: You and every of you are required, in the King’s Majesty’s name, to take these vagabond Quakers, Anne Coleman, Mary Tomkins, and Alice Ambrose, and make them fast to the cart’s tail, and, driving the cart through your several towns, to whip them upon their naked backs, not exceeding ten stripes apiece on each of them in each town; and to convey them from constable to constable till they are out of this jurisdiction."
Despite the snow on the ground, they were stripped for the entire ordeal - they couldn't have kept up the pace in long skirts, and panties were yet to be invented.
It's no wonder the Quakers formed a colony of their own at Pennsylvania. And there's no evidence that they retaliated by whipping Puritan girls naked through Pittsburgh, Altoona, Harrisburg, Allentown and Philadelphia, until they were out of the jurisdiction!
1663 Anne Coleman.jpg
One of the three Quaker women whipped in my last posting, Anne Coleman was caught preaching again the following winter in Salem, Massachusetts. This was not allowed for women OR Quakers. During the resulting whipping, the lash curled around and severely hurt her right nipple. All the Puritan constable had to do was stand a bit closer.

1665 Mrs Tollman.jpg
Fact: At the Rhode Island colony in America, Peter Tollman sought divorce from his wife for her adultery. Found guilty, she was given 15 strokes of the cane at Portsmouth and 15 at Newport, to be delivered on the bare skin.
1692 Tituba.jpg
Everyone knows about the witch trials in Salem ("The Crucible" was based on real trials). This pricking on the rack with hot needles, to find a 'witches mark', was part of the usual process. It involved careful examination of the accused woman's naked body. Not that this was in any way a motivation for these puritanical Christian men. Surely not!
1704 Senora Vasconcellos.jpg
English by birth, but married to a Spaniard, the Señora was whipped by the Inquisition in 1704, and burned in several places on her body. And why not? The English were ALL heretics, weren't they? It was a surprise to Ms Vasconcellos. As the saying goes: "Nobody expects..."
1744 Countess Lopukhina.jpg
Natalia Lopukhina (or Lapuchin) of Russia was an accessory to a treasonous plot involving a foreign diplomat. Empress Elizabeth, who had always been jealous of Natalia's beauty, made sure her lovely skin was marred. On 31 May 1744, the Countess was stripped naked in public, 'horsed' by the soldiers in charge of her punishment, and flogged back and front with the vicious Russian knout. Its broad flat leather lash was hardened, sometimes with a wire core, and jointed with a ring near the end so the tip would travel faster.
1768 Rosa Keller.jpg
At Arceuil near Paris, Rosa Keller was offered a job as a servant by a young nobleman. When she arrived for work she found out the true agenda of her new master, the Marquis de Sade. He made her strip naked at gunpoint, chained her up in the attic, and whipped her cruelly. He was jailed for this, and not for the last time. Although he wrote about all kinds of strange perversions, the Marquis' actual practice was the simple situation pictured. He wasn't a nice guy by any stretch of the imagination, but unlike his contemporaries (both aristocrats and revolutionaries) he never killed anyone.
1786 Countess de LaMotte.jpg
This Countess of the noble Valois family became involved in a fraud concerning Queen Marie Antionette's diamonds. The Queen was furious and vengeful. Not present in court, LaMotte didn't hear her sentence until it was carried out. She was stripped bare in her cell and brought naked to Paris's public place of punishment, the Cours de Justice. The humiliated Countess was then flogged - some accounts say with switches, others with rods. All the time, she screamed insults at her captors and struggled violently. Then she was branded with a hot iron and jailed.
1788 Liz Dudgens etc.jpg
Women were whipped in Australia's first years as a British penal colony, as one witness described:
"Their hair has been cut off and their head shaved, which they seem to dislike more than any other punishment. At first one or two were flogg’d with a cat-o-nine-tails on the naked breech... They were also whilst under punishment so very abusive that there was necessity for gagging them." (Aussie girls have always had attitude). Elizabeth Dudgens was one such. She had already escaped from one prison ship and swum ashore, and was whipped on the transportation ship during the crossing, for swearing at the Captain. Then at Sydney Cove, she couldn't keep out of trouble.
61AD Boadicea.jpg
Queen Boudika (to give her name correctly) was chief of the Iceni tribe of Celts in the north of Britain. She had got on well with the local Roman garrison for years. Then in 61AD, a new Roman governor named Paulinus Suetonius arrived, and thought she was too snotty. He would show her who was in charge here. He had her stripped naked in front of her people and flogged. Meanwhile, the soldiers had their way with her two daughters (over 18). She responded by raising a Celtic revolt that killed Suetonius and all his garrison. Nero had to send a whole new legion to put them down. Hell hath no fury...

P.S. It should be noted that the historical descriptions of KajiraGames is very very inaccurate.

I just love the historical vignettes and illustrations....so well done.

Displeased her mistress, I suppose.

I'd like to write a short story set in the 17th century Russia -- a flagellation and not a crucifixion one, but I hope it'll find itself a place somewhere.

Love to see it. A story set in historical setting is always enjoyable. Just post it somewhere here, and it will be appreciated.

Aye, owt about the knout will go gradely in the 'Mainly Stories and Poems' BDSM Forum -
looking forward to it!

Dmitry Merezhkovsky was knowing for researching his novels in depth, and he puts a fictional criminal case (set in Russia c. 1719), where a woman undergoes such a fate, in Peter and Alexis (1904):

The case of the heretics was investigated by the newly established Holy Synod.

The runaway Cossack, Averian Bespaly, and his sister, Akoulina, were condemned to suffer death on the wheel. The rest, after being flogged and having their nostrils torn, were condemned, the men to forced labour, and the women to weaving-workshops and prison-cloisters.

Wheels
Wheing was still carried out until the beginning of the 19th century in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. This punishment was based on crimes such as murder, street scream, spouse and parody. Wheeling was largely reserved for men. Most of the victims were tortured before they were taken to the place of execution. There the delinquent was mostly led to a scaffold and undressed. Now he was thrown to the ground and tied. Then the carpenter, with a new cartwheel, stood over his victim, and dropped it with full force upon the lower legs, causing them to break. He continued this procedure with the knees and thighs. After these torture, the executioner carried out the same procedure with the lower and upper arm of the delinquent. Afterwards the executioner continued his activity with blows against the sacrum of the victim, Death of the delinquent. This aggravated form of wheeledness, with the frightener starting from the legs, meant unimaginable agony for the victim. The Rent.
In France the beating on the limbs was carried out not with the wheel, but with a long iron bar. For this purpose, there was a secret article, which determined the beatings which were delivered to the condemned, the so-called Retentum. The retentia determines exactly the blows with the barre (an iron rod), which are given on the delinquents. When the number of beatings is reached, the Retention ordered the Shreaper to strangle the condemned secretly. So he should be spared the suffering that awaits him when he is put on the wheel.

The art of the executioner

The art of the executioner was to break the bones without damaging the skin, and how the wheels were carried out depended mostly on the judgment of the court, or on the bribery of the executioner, but often an oblation was given to him by the family, That he might slay his sacrifice before the ordeal, or at least start with the wheel from above on the head.the second part followed the first part of the sentence, where more than half of the victims were still alive, and the wounded body was placed on a cartwheel , Where his broken limbs were braided by the sprouts of the wheel, after which the wheel was put on a stake and set up at the place of execution, so that the people could observe the death struggle, the condemned partly still hours to days.

But even then there were already some incidents

On 27 November 1721, Cartouche (the king of thieves) was executed by the wheel. His execution was a folk festival in Paris where everyone was present who could somehow make it possible. He was handed over to the Scharfrichter, and he was led to the scaffold. There he was strapped to an Andreaskreuz. When the barbarian with Baare crushed the flesh and the bones of Cartouche, the latter counted the blows. But his composure was broken by the blows of the harlot, and there was nothing to be heard except his pleading for divine mercy. But now another disaster took its course. The secretary of the court had forgotten to tell the Scharfrichter the Retentia, which was to put an end to the suffering of the condemned. After the eleventh stroke, when he was completely shattered and braided on the wheel, he lived for at least an hour.

The death

When death finally came over the convict, the corpse was left to itself and could not be taken away. The birds and animals gave a rest. In some areas it was an unwritten law, "if the convict still lives after three days to take him off the wheel again."

In the Middle Ages, "driving" was a popular and cruel method of execution. Above all, men killed the torture slaves this way. Archaeologists have hardly found the victims of this kind of punishment.

"Execution through the wheel - wheeled delinquent found", said a meeting for regional archaeologists. A remarkable find that leaves questions open. Especially since archaeologists have not yet been able to prove the death penalty of wheezing on medieval or modern skeletons.
"... with the council to be struck" - wheels in the criminal law

Wheeled was one of the cruelest and at the same time most ignominious and most dishonest punishments for murder, robbery and theft. In the Middle Ages, criminal law punished almost exclusively men.

Already known in Roman antiquity, this sentence appears for the first time in the Lex Salica as a punishment for fornication with the mistress. In the Sachsenspiegel, it is said in the 13th century that church raiders, traitors and murderers are to be "radebreken". The Criminal Code of Constitutio Criminalis Carolina, the embarrassing court order of Emperor Charles V of 1532, contains punishments for killing offenses of various kinds. The punishment was especially cruel, the delinquents were often beheaded or strangled from the 17th century onwards. Until the beginning of the 19th century, the court still existed after the wheels. In the year 1841, the torture slaughter was the last executed in Germany in the Prussian women's castle.
Until the last stroke with full awareness

The form of the punishment was to bind the condemned to the pegs, often bare of any clothing, on the ground, and to lay mostly three-edged woods under the legs, arms, and the upper body. According to a number of bruises, as stated in the judgment, it was mostly related to the number of offenses, the torture slaves "bumped" the delinquent "from below" with one wheel all the limbs and the backbone. This direction of the wheels, which was fixed in the judgment, was especially painful for the person concerned, and he experienced the injuries up to the last stroke with full awareness.

As a punishment, however, wheezing was "from above," whereby the wheel first injured the head, neck or chest of the delinquent, and only then the rest of the body. Death entered here quickly, and, contrary to wheezing from below, the condemned man no longer experienced the braiding through the spokes of the wheel. To be deterred, the executioners of the punishment often put the head of the delinquent on a stake or the wheel hub, and put it together with the body of the weather and the animal-feed.

If the offender had carried out a particularly gruesome act, there was the possibility of a criminal offense. In the Constitutio Criminalis Carolina it is said, "such miserable miserable persons, before the todesstraff schleiyfft, or some grasping of the body with glowing tongues are given." That means, the Delinquent could, before the wheel kills him, on a cow skin or a Wooden board to the rendezvous. On contemporary pictures the parting of the barracks is shown, on which the harlot knaves the condemned man on the way to the court with glowing tongs.
Archaeological evidence is scarce

Numerous sources report condemnations to death by the wheel, often also in connection with the grueling and painful grinding to the site. In addition there are reports of delinquents, who have survived the ordeal on the wheel for days. Nevertheless, the question arises why we find the victims of this gruesome and track-like penal execution difficult today, but hardly at all.
