... in which he described that in the early times of the Argentinian dictatorship after the military coup of 1976, the aim of the special squadrons which made assumed "enemies of the state" disappear was to transfer them so fast from their normal life into a nightmare of military violence and torture that they had no chance to build a psychological wall against that nightmare. So, they were abducted in the night and tortured with electro shocks right from their arrival in one of the secret prisons, often blindfold and gagged without being asked anything and without being able to scream anything - just to demonstrate the possibility of being reduced by their torturers to an animal-like being without any rights.
Timerman wrote that this was only changed one year later after some victims died really only because of the shock of their abduction and because of a circulatory breakdown because of their fear by being treated in a way in which they could not see or say anything - even before they were mistreated by electro shocks, which was also sometimes done for hours without asking anything just in order to maximize the fear of the victims.
Compared to other military dictatorships in Latin America, the Argentinian one caused probably the biggest number of completely innocent victims because Timerman also described how complete classes of students of sociology or political science from the universities or all members from a labor's union in a whole city "disappeared" within one single night. Most of their bodies were never found again and the total number of "desaparecidos" in latest publications from Argentina exceeds most probably by far 30.000 persons of all ages!
