Judicial Corporal Punishment Of Women: Illustrations

Go to CruxDreams.com
Public flogging for stealing a bodice
The punishment of a public whipping was frequently administered to women who were found guilty of certain offences, as well as to men.
The order that those who are to be whipped should be "stript to the waist" before being flogged, which is often included in the records of the Quarter Sessions, would also apply to women, as in the example shown below.
The record shown on one of the transportation pages, which refers to the choice of a convicted woman to be transported for seven years rather than be whipped, gives some idea of the harshness of the punishment.

"If it pleases the court, my client asks that his young wife is spared the flogging. He acknowledges his sentence of three months and a public flogging. However he feels that they have suffered enough as they have been in confinement and kept naked. We ask only that his wife be spared the lash"

"Appeal denied! If these visitors cannot respect our laws they must face the consequences!" "50 lashes each!" "On second thoughts double for the bitch"

"Take them away!!"

Preparations are made, while family members are allowed to provide comfort for the woman.

"Now it is the turn of this woman, who has chosen to break our laws. It has been deemed that she be lashed 100 time! Alas our magistrate has been kind and allowed the original 50 lashes to remain. However he has ordered that she be whipped with a fresh whip. Our police chief will administer the punishment!"

Here are images illustrating four different implementations of the pillory for women in Germany. All images by M. Henze circa 1900 from the books of Rudolf Quanter (who published several books about the history of judicial punishments in Germany, including at least two about punishments for immorality -- no full copies online I think, so I'm not sure whether they're serious historical tomes or more in the Nell In Bridewell style).

Here is a whore being paraded through the streets on a donkey facing the tail, stripped to the waist:

A double punishment of two lovers: the man is receiving a public flogging ("Staupenschlag") with a bundle of birches while above him his lover is publicly exhibited in a cage mounted on top of the whipping post. No idea whether they are forced to swap over once they've finished flogging him:

I have just found a much higher-quality source for these images I posted a while ago, and further images by the same artist (mainly on the topic of judicial German torture) -- these are from the website of the Norwegian Technical Museum in Oslo, of all places:

Here is some female judicial torture artwork by M. Henze, also from the Oslo museum website. They illustrate some of the torture methods I have discussed in my recent post in the other thread here. I'm omitting the images with male subjects.

The "prickly chair":

The head band (and the Spanish horse, on a male subject) -- note the neck fiddles and shame masks in the background:

Water torture:

And a non-German theme -- stoning of a woman, somewhere in the orient. The artist doesn't seem to have researched this one properly:

I am sure that when I posted this back in September, none of Rudolf Quanter's books were online. However, checking now I see that seven of his books have recently been scanned. All of them are on hathitrust.org for online browsing only (requires VPN to a US server for access) and five of them are also on Google Books for download as free PDF. Here is a link to all of them:

These are the original sources for the illustrations in my previous two posts. At a quick glance, these are all popular history books with a rather narrow focus on either (a) extramarital sex, (b) torture and executions, (c) judicial corporal and other public punishments, (d) prison sentences, (e) the role of women in religious cults in history. The tone is quite serious and somewhat highbrow, but the choice of subjects betrays prurient interest. Clearly somebody who would find a home on CF these days!

Something of a giveaway are the final few pages of his book "DIe freie Liebe" (Free Love), which consists of adverts for other books by the same publisher -- largely a list of specialist books on flagellantism, corporal punishment and S/M (including the actual Sacher-Masoch books). It's not really an academic publisher, however much Quanter pretends!

Some more illustrations from Richard Quanter's books, a mix of public humiliation, torture and executions. The first one illustrates the Prussian Army regulation which specified that whores found in camp were to be stripped and evicted -- Quanter claims they were actually doing that as late at 1808 and in the picture they seem to have been shorn as well. Some of these images have later been used in other books and online without credit (the second one for example I have posted before from a modern book), but I believe that Quanter was the one to commission and first publish them.
