After the European Commission has approved Pfizer's Coronavaccin, the first truckloads are on their way.

Now starts the discussion about the strategy? Health workers first, but who is next? Elderly? The youngsters? Specific categories, like teachers, police? In which region do we start? How to set up mass vaccinations?

There is not just that. The transports are a security issue themselves, and little is revealed about them. Trucks are accompanied and guarded by the police. The vaccin loads are, after all, 'liquid gold', for sure, for the manufacturers, but they also attract undesired attention of organised crime!

ok, that's it, the fireworks are over in Sydney and I can officially greet you all from the year 2021. Let's hope it's better than the year we just had!

Happy New Year to all!

Fireworks were reduced this year, and very reduced numbers watching live from around the Harbour.

Here in Thuringia (Germany), fireworks are completely forbidden this year and the nightly curfew is only suspended from 10PM to 3AM, after which it applies again.

Jan 15th 2001, Wikipedia was born. 20 years old.

Do we need to 'learn' any facts now? I fear we will/have split into those who know things to win quizzes, and those who just know enough to type a question into a search engine.

For those of us who like facts, thank you all the contributors to CF who supply us with plenty.

Do we learn 'facts'? Wiki has improved vastly over the years, with intelligent and informed contributors adding and editing the entries, but even on 'mainstream' matters it should never be relied on, and those for more obscure topics are likely to be, at best, inadequate and partial (in both senses)

'The sky above Baghdad is lit up!' Thirty years ago today, on 17 January 1991, Operation Desert Storm began.
Curiously, they had announced the beginning of the attack days in advance.

And even more curiously, later in the campaign (Operation Desert Sabre), one could see in advance the tactical maneuver they were planning. On maps, one could see the strongest forces on the left flank, including the French Foreign Legion. They were not positioned to invade Kuwait, but more to the west, facing directly the Saudi-Arabia - Iraq border.

If Saddam Hussein, or his advisors, had watched western news broadcasts, you would expect that at least one of them would have recalled what the Schlieffen Plan had been about. Or were they so confident, no ally would set foot on Iraqi ground and only run into Kuwait territory?

Anyway, @Barbaria1 has also good Thousand-and-one-Night memories to that campaign.:D

On a lighter note, Jan 17th 1921.

The 100th anniversary of the first recorded performance of Sawing a Woman in Half. (Guinness) At the Finsbury Park Empire theatre, London. By Percy Selbit on Betty Parker.

It's not recorded how the meat was cooked........

I'm surprised that such a classic magic trick is only that recent. It has got to be the most stereotypical magic trick, alongside taking a rabbit out of a hat.

A flank attack is the oldest trick in the book!

150 years ago today, on 18 January 1871, the German Empire was proclaimed at Versailles in occupied France.

And Europe was off to the fucking races.

Until the Atomic Age was quietly proclaimed seventy-four years later -- at Potsdam in occupied Germany.
Bismarck's little idea. Wilhelm only accepted it with reluctance. The king of Bavaria had to be bribed to give his support.
