Praefectus Praetorio: stories and tributes

Go to CruxDreams.com
My first interaction with PrPr was on my story, "Visiting the Jackson Plantation", which I happened to have set in his beloved Low Country of South Carolina. I recall we had a discussion of what crops might have been grown there in the antebellum period-I said cotton and he said rice and we were both right, I think. He called me out on my twisting of Civil War history, which I will claim as poetic license.

Among the more recent interactions occured when I played off his story, "The Fate of a Goth Girl" with the Stan Goldman/Barbara Moore silliness of "The Fate of a Gotham Goth Girl". He took it in the spirit in which it was meant, as imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, and gave it a very positive review.

PrPr had a deep knowledge in areas as diverse as physics, music and literature (the real kind, not just the stuff we post here). That icon he used of the writer with the old-fashioned quill pen will be missed.

In a not dissimilar vein to Windy, I had penned my tale "The Georgia Peach" and was looking for a CF'er to help me edit it ready for posting. The guidance, time and patience on what was one of his many and varied areas of considerable knowledge was mentorship at its best. Any subsequent success I might have had with tales like The Wall, or Sexpionage I attribute greatly to our dear, departed friend.

Sad news

Praefectus Praetorio communicated with both of us frequently, and told us a good deal about his 'real life' self. Becoming seriously concerned when he hadn't returned a couple of weeks after he'd said he'd be away from the Forums for a few days, Barb did some searching and found an obituary for a gentleman who died unexpectedly on 5th December, the day after we last heard from Pr Pr. Sadly, the information in that obituary was sufficient to leave us in no doubt whatever that it was our friend who has passed away.

He was a good man, highly intelligent and widely read, sincere and quietly passionate in his beliefs and principles, a lively, witty contributor to the life of Crux Forums, and his superbly written stories will be a treasured memorial to him here.

Barb and Eul
I have no words :(

in the same vein, in addition to being a good friend, PrPr was tremendously helpful as a critic and a supplier of background information pertinent to the writing of a few of my most recent stories, especially Bataan Barb and The Cardinal Bishop and his Female Pope. In the case of the latter story, he was not only a source of inspiration but also the model for the Cardinal Bishop. There is a lot of PrPr in that character!

As all these comments come out, I am finding it amazing to learn how much he was an influence on the quality of writing here on CF and how big a behind the scenes role he played in nurturing stories from new members.

Him and I had an ongoing conversation that started back in Aug/2018 , he was a kind and caring man that was very supportive

Not just the stories. PrPr was a big part of the social glue here.

This is his legacy, the interactions, the assistance and care he gave, the friends he leaves with so many good memories. I'm sorry now that I did not have more time to get to know him.

But not only was his knowledge extensive, and his encouragement freely given, he was eager to accept what bits of help I could give. I proof-read and made suggestions regarding his English stories (I leave Scotland well alone) and was humbled to see most of my little ideas incorporated into his epic tales. It was such a pleasure working with him, and a private message was always opened with eager anticipation.

Just been nostalgically re-reading my own pm thread with praetorio, it only ran to 6 pages but was wide ranging. Voltaire and Jonathan Swift were mentioned…. (As was Barb’s tight-little.. ) I think of PrPr as one of those 18th century philosopher-storytellers, perhaps closest to Lawrence Sterne in lightness of touch, fluency, and tendency to digress. He always poked fun at my “appalling” limericks but thanked me very warmly for writing one which praised his work :

Gosh he was generous. I’ve got 8 pages of nostalgia to re read and enjoy. Of course, I burdened him with my lengthy replies and despite his pleas that he didn’t read long passages well, still he took the time to read and respond. I’m glad I praised him, he knew I loved his works, particularly goth girl and Dinae and the unparalleled Horae, which touched me extremely deeply. He said he appreciated my insight given I’m a submissive slave in a C/nc relationship- it touched me that he could perceive the depth of a psyche like mine…

PrPr's last three stories:

(the second part, with Dina's wedding)

(PrPr's last, magnificent though sadly unfinished work)

I posted this dedication yesterday in my Sexpionage thread, but it also has a home here I feel ... thank you @Eulalia and @Barbaria1 for creating this place where we can remember our friend ...

Praefectus Praetorio ...

PrPr, as he was known to many, was a much appreciated supporter of Sexpionage. More than a supporter, he was an advocate, frequently offering up public comments highlighting his favourite parts and offering insightful thoughts. But almost as frequently he would message me privately and say things like "have you thought of this ...", "Maybe have them do this instead of ..." and so on. Even though he could be pretty discerning about the stories and threads he committed to, I know that I wasn't the only more junior author that he did this for,

We never really collaborated publicly, though the closest we came was his love for the Face-Claim I suggested and then provided in many a photo manipulation for his beloved 'Trixie' ... the gorgeous girl with the wild red hair.

Over the past few days PrPr has been described as a friend, a mentor, part of the glue to CF's social infrastructure, well-read, wise and one reflective post in response to the news of his untimely and sad passing, said simply "Fuck", which, despite its monosyllabic nature, seemed a somewhat apt manifestation of how we all felt.

So, rest in peace PrPr. I know you would want us all to continue to create and post our tormenting and tortuous narratives along with the occasional descriptive picture or two, and I'm certain that we won't let you down. You are in our thoughts and I know that I won't be able to login to CF without a thought or two of your good-self coming to the fore.
