I love these early 'decadent' scenes - I can't believe they were 'postcards', cartes postales, to be sent through the post with the address and stamp on one side, the naughty picture on the other, I think the facteurs (posties) would have spent too much time enjoying them to get their rounds done! Maybe greetings cards, to be sent in discreet envelopes.

From everything I’ve read, "ze filthy French postcards" never even had a place to put a stamp, much less were ever sent through the mail. They were simply a convenient format for porn, as in the examples below, illustrating the alleged goings-on at a nudist colony.

They can be seen as being at least in shadows of the 'Decadent' movement in Paris in the late 19th century,
with its celebration of the transgressive - e.g. Felicien Rops

Indeed. I’ve always thought the gentleman in the Mihaly Zichy drawing below is a self portrait. Was the lady a model or a mistress?

They could have even been done in the photo studios as it was easier to move the models than the cameras.

Even during the American Civil War there were photos known as "French Postcards". Sometimes I suspect the camera was invented for all of 15 minutes before the first porn shot was made.
