Public Executions In The Arena

Go to CruxDreams.com
Some executions took place in the arenas in the early afternoon, when, especially in summer, it was very hot. For this reason the arenas were sometimes half empty. Hunting shows and gladiator fights took place in the morning or late afternoon.

Actually some of us do because we rely on the titles to see what interests us.

For example, pictures of crucified males don't belong in the "Crucified Women" thread.

Depends on the males. This Carvelli dude’s crucified guys don’t make me want play for the other team, but I begin to understand them that do.

In the future, I will publish pictures of the Holy martyrs with information about them . This will be linked to their memory dates. I think there is no point in opening a new topic. I will publish here.

If Michele is OK with it, I don’t see why not.

JULITTA OF IKONIUM TORTURED TO DEATH

Gabriel Roman arena 448-1-.jpg

Julitta was a Christian widow who lived with her infant son Cyriacus (Cyricus, Quiricus) in Anatolia, according to some source in Ikonium (today: Konya, Turkey), to others in Tarsus. In 304 she was arrested because of her faith. Her child was killed before her eyes (the judge threw him upon the floor), and she was cruelly tortured and in the end beheaded.

PARASCEVA OF IKONIUM CRUCIFIED AND BURNED WITH TORCHES

Gabriel Roman arena 450-1-.jpg

Parasceva lived during the third century at Iconium (Turkey) in a rich and pious family. Her parents reverenced especially the day of the Passion of the Lord, and therefore they called their daughter this name, since she had been born on a Friday and the name Parasceva in Slavic translation from the Greek means also Friday.
The young woman with all her heart loved purity and the lofty morality of the virginal life, and she took a vow of celibacy. She wanted to devote all her life to God and to the enlightenment of pagans with the light of the faith of Christ. Upon this righteous path Saint Paraskeva was brought to judgment, bearing in her own name the memory of the day of the terrible sufferings of Jesus, and she shared in the Passion of Christ also in her own life through her bodily torments.
Because of her confession of the Orthodox faith, the pagans in a frenzy seized hold of her and brought her to the city governor. Here they demanded that she offer sacrifice to the pagan idol. With a steady heart, and trusting on God, the saint refused this demand. For this she underwent great torments: having tied her to a cross, the torturers tortured her pure body with burning torches and iron hooks. Finally, they cut off her head.

JULIANA OF CUMAE SCUORGED

Gabriel Roman arena 431-1-.jpg

Juliana was the daughter of a Roman officer, who was not pleased with her becoming a Christian. In 305 Juliana refused to marry a pagan Roman prefect. The suitor took offense and decided that either he or no one should have her, and arranged for the girl to be imprisoned and tortured.
Her father did nothing to protect her. On the contrary, he had his daughter scourged and assisted the torturers. But the girl remained steadfast, even when she was suspended by her hair and tormented with red-hot irons. Then she was plunged into a cauldron filled with hot oil. When she miraculously survived this, she was dispatched with a sword strike.

BLANDINA OF LYON CONDEMNED “AS BESTIAS”

Gabriel Roman arena 432-1-.jpg

Blandina was a Christian slave girl who died in 177 in Lyon during the same persecution to which also Perpetua and Felicitas fell victim. According to the legend, she was tortured on the rack and, when that did not break her spirit, tied to a pole or a cross and presented in the arena to a pride of hungry lions and tigers The lions injured Blandina but did not kill her. Then her tormentors threw her into the arena, and sent wild bulls against her. She was tossed about by the animals and grievously injured, but not killed. In the end the executioners had to use their swords.

EULALIA OF BARCELONA TORTURED ON A X-SHAPED CROSS

Gabriel Roman arena 451-1-.jpg

The daughter of a noble family, Eulalia lived near the city of Barcelona. During the persecutions under Diocletian, governor Dacian arrived in the city intent on enforcing the decrees. Eulalia went to the city and confronted the governor, denouncing him for his persecution of Christians. Unable to dismiss her eloquent appeals, Dacian had her stripped and flogged. Afterwards, she was tortured with various implements until she would deny her beliefs or die. Her wounds were burned with torches, but the flames blew back against her tormentors. She prayed that God would take her to Heaven, then died.

A dove is supposed to have flown forth from her mouth following her death, then a sudden snowstorm covered her mostly nude body like a garment.[2]

It is traditionally believed that her tortures culminated in her crucifixion on an X-shaped cross, and she is depicted with this cross as the instrument of her martyrdom. However, it has been posited that she was instead publicly tortured on an X frame and left there after she died.

Bobinder has posted a wonderful portrayal by Mahashiva of Alice Kiss as Eulalia of Merida (the 'real' Eulalia!)
