On the topic of weird plans of the 20s and 30s: The French seem to have assumed that if a plane was butt-ugly and looked like it shouldn't even be able to fly; it would make a great bomber.

Believe it or not, number 3 carried out the first Allied bombing raid on Berlin in 1940.
And, just so you don't think I'm picking on the French, the RAF didn't do much better.

You see a good example of why France was overwhelmed so quickly at the start of ww2.
 
Bombed Berlin in 1940 you say. Did any of them make it back to France?
Yes it did just fine

When Jules Verne Bombed Berlin

The Jules Verne was a bomber of the French Navy, if you look at the map in the article you will note that not only did it have the range to hit Berlin from Bordeaux, it flew out the long way and attacked from behind! It then landed in Paris as most good French stories end in Paris!
