Hello to all,

I'm new here, but have long had an interest in Roman crucifixion, and recently created a website that I hope will serve to educate people about it. I've read a lot of articles and the claims people make about crucifixion, and I want to cut through the noise. But I haven't found anywhere for people with a serious interest in crucifixion to discuss the facts. I know this is a porn site, but I hope maybe the community here can also discuss the merits of various arguments and claims about historical Roman crucifixion. If you are interested, please check out my website and let me know your thoughts on my articles.

Sincerely,
Lictor4

This is a solid collection of the most agreed upon facts and elements surrounding crucifixion free of the biases from religious or academic sources, or the sensationalism of tv. It’sa great reference to show those who are unfamiliar with the topic the expert consensus.

Thank you for the endorsement, and for taking a look at it! Do you or any other members here have recommendations for other topics I should add, or other misconceptions you've heard? Or more details you think would enrich what I've already written?

Actually, since I'm here asking, can anyone recommend historically accurate crucifixion art I can use on the website? For example, I don't want to show anyone wearing a loincloth, but I also want the site to appear "respectable" and appropriate for all audiences. I would like to show women, but again, I don't want it to lose the "serious," "research" feel. Any suggestions?

Wow, this will take me a while to get through. It looks like a lot of serious research, though. My hope is that my website will bring this kind of research to a wider audience, because I think a lot of people wouldn't come here to find it.

It's a very interesting and well presented website, Lictor!

In terms of art, @jedakk has gone to some trouble to research the processes of Roman crucifixion:

Sabina Nailing Scene 20-1_0001.jpg

You certainly won't catch him using footrests!

His masterpiece, The Serpent's Eye is to be recommended:

Thank you! Looks like some great art, though maybe not suitable for a PG-13 website.
No, and I thought that the Augusto Cezar image which you selected for your site was an inspired choice. :)

Thank you, although I think the crown of thorns is an illustration of the kind of muddled thinking and lack of logic I'm trying to counter. If I can find a better image, I will use it.
In that case I might humbly suggest a suitably cropped version of @bobinder's 'Judea Capta':

I might be showing too much nipple there...

A couple of other questions for your site, one thrown up by that image - the use of the 'titulus' board, and whether wooden washers were used on the nails to prevent the limb puulling off the nail.

These are great ideas, Wragg. Have these been discussed among the community here? It seems to me we have one piece of archaeological evidence for the wooden washers, and one account (the Bible) for the titulus. Does anybody know of more?

(Yes, looks like her nipple is showing.)

These subjects come up, for example here:

in which I agree with Old Slave that it would in fact be easier to design your nail with a wide enough head to do the job.

As for titles, I think the feeling that the condemned was forced to carry their patibulum while carrying a notice of their crime around their neck, which was subsequently attached to the cross is in accord with the verall theme of humiliation.

Sorry

Thanks for the recommendation, Wragg. Here is 'Ivdaea Capta 6c'.

Nice website, Lictor. I note the scepticism about footrests, but in practical terms, they provide a method of nailing the feet prior to attaching to the stipes, as well as increasing the useful life of the latter, since it is not then repeatedly subjected to having nails driven in and pulled out. ;)

Thank you. Yes, I would say there is nothing implausible about using a removable piece of wood to nail the feet. But because it comes purely from a "thought experiment," and no actual evidence, I'm reluctant to say we have any reason to believe the Romans used it. My reason for believing that any such piece of wood did NOT provide "rest" or a place to stand is that ancient references to crucifixion describe the person as "hanging" or sometimes "sitting" on the cross. Standing on a footrest doesn't seem to fit that description.

(For some reason Wordpress doesn't like the file type for the image. I'll have to see what I can figure out.)

If you can access the below podcast you will learn from eminent academics who specialise in this period that :

1) There were probably more female slaves than male, as many males were killed in the very combat that would have lead to capitulation & slavery

2) Male slaves were actually more valuable than females ( evidence from slave auctions)

3) Women earned their freedom later than men, and therefore spent longer in slavery.

4) The method of control over the slave population was, i quote "whip and cross". It was not whip & cross plus something else less nasty if you're a woman / pretty, and as we've already established, women were the majority of slaves and served the longest.

5) there is a surviving contract from municipal authority to an undertaker to carry out crucifixions and dispose of bodies.

In brief, top level academics have told us that crucifixion was the standard punishment for slaves. There were millions of slaves at any one time, and the majority of them were women

Lots of women were crucified

And to imagine that you'd extend some kind of modesty to a woman you're having nailed to a cross doesn't really make sense does it?
