As far as I understand your opinion (I am German, you know, and I do not understand every word without dictionary or translator, e.g. "skimpy", "tarts", "kit off" ??? ;) ), your opinion honors you, but in wars - and this in Argentina was "a secret undeclared war against so-called 'subversive' parts of the own population" even in the words of their own government - people can become even more "degenerate" than we all believe in our usually very peaceful democracies.
In Timerman's words, Argentina between 1976 and 1983 was a militarily governed nation with a parallel world of madness with several military secret services partly working against each other and the normal police somewhere in between. I once really studied political science and Argentina was an example how fast and unbelievable a "not stable democray" can turn into a crazy dictatorship. I remember parts of Timerman's book which I will quote here from my memory just to show the madness in the development there.

Between 1970 and 1976, there were really street fights between left- and right-wing extremists and terrorists in some Argentinian cities, bank robberies and kidnappings from both sides and Timerman as a brave neutral newspaper-publisher once received on the same day two letters - one from a left wing and one from a right wing extremist organization who told him both he was sentenced to death for being on the wrong side in the nations fight for freedom! He published both with the cynical remark he will be interested who will claim his death first. Then the military made a "Coup d'état" and because they were "rather" right-winged themselves, they hunted the left-wing extremists in particular with all their means.

At first, there was silence and "peace" with the military openly on the streets and most of the Argentinians were at first glad that the street wars were over because one half of the "war participients" suddenly disappeared - but it was certainly the silence and peace of a cemetery because so many persons suddenly disappeared and Timerman had a special trick how to find out where some persons could be:
The secret services of Argentinian army, marine and air force did not work together and he simply claimed in his newspaper that Mr or Mrs X was abducted by the marine. The secret service of the marine felt insulted of such a public claim and started its own research and after 24 hours, Timerman received an anonymous call or letter that Mr X was abducted by the air force and was most probably arrested in a secret prison of the air force!
Certainly, he could not do this too often and this "trick" once was the reason for his own abduction and torture because the secret service who kidnapped him was interested in the informations of him how he knew that this or that secret service had abducted Mr or Mrs X.
Concerning the secret prison where he was held, he described absolutely unbelievable conditions of human madness in a militarized society of madness.
For example: One female student was tortured there and after the soldiers and guards came to the conclusion that she was innocent of all what other tortured prisoners had told them about her but their guards now knowing everything about her family, they let her go and "hired" instead her jobless father as professional electrician who was then responsible for maintenance and repair of the electrical machines which were used there to torture other prisoners.

He was then a kind of hostage for his family instead of his daughter but this way, he even became a part of the torture machinery.

Timerman also described examples of tortured young beautiful women of whom he could hear their cries at night in his cell that they never were "city guerilleras", "communists" or "socialists" but he was of the opinion that they were sometimes only tortured by electric shocks without leaving any traces on their bodies until they gave up every hope and mental resistance against their torturerers (following quotation by Timerman: ) "... until they were accessible to all the guards' sexual desires."

In such a world of a dictatorship gone mad, the boundaries are fluid between the political goals of the new rulers and the crimes and / or secret sexual desires of their henchmen.
Even after the end of the dictatorship, the torturers sometimes were gangs on their own and one example was so incredible that there was this movie made of it:

Timerman probably only survived because he was a relatively famous publisher, sometimes telling the torturerers exactly what they wanted to hear because speculating for surviving long enough for a "show trial" like in Stalin's Soviet Union. Indeed, one Argentinian officer once said to him, his statements will be interesting for the process against the "communist Jews" in Argentina - by the way: partly absolutely crazy statements like "Israel will invade Patagonia as soon as possible"! (Sounds for me similar crazy as a statement I once heard from a historical "show trial" in Stalin's Soviet Union in which one Russian nuclear physicist confirmed after his torture to have sold the plans for an H-bomb to the USA! This only shows how mad these dictatorial regimes sometimes can become on their hunt for imaginary enemies which they need desparately to keep up their measures of suppression in order to stay in power. When there were no more living enemies for this crazy military Junta in Argentina, they tried to conquer the Falkland Islands which led to the war with Great Britain in 1982 and 1983 to their fall in Argentina in the end - but probably more than 40.000 Argentinians disappeared until then and never came back!)
And because Timerman also had connections to the USA and Israel, he probably had more influential friends abroad than he himself had thought.

We all can only be happy that probably most of us never had and hopefully never will have to experience such a horror of an unstable democracy turned into a such a temporary dictatorship with secret services out of any control!
Hello Silent_Water,
Sorry, I didn't treat your post with the gravity I should have and my comment was frivolous and ill considered. Never mind "skimpy, tarts and kit off." They don't matter now I understand your interest in Argentina.

Nations have always been run by governments put there by self interested parties who desire the nation to be run for their own profit rather than for the benefit of the population. This happens in privileged Western nations through the mechanism of marketing, where those with the biggest advertising budgets buy the votes they need with a larger, more vocal media presence. John Kenneth Galbraith is good reading here. Now the power behind the sale of democracy is global capitalism, in past times it was the landowners who actually did own the country and for a few hundred years it was the Catholic Church, in Europe that is.

Dictatorships are a brutal corruption of the same system but devoid of any of the carefully orchestrated diversions which seduce the population into believing they have a choice. I mean that in a dictatorship negative incentives to behave take precedence over positive ones such as consumerism. Negative incentives are of course punishment.

I always like to think of government as something of a protection racket. This is certainly how Republicanism works in the USA. The population need to be threatened with something those in power can promise to protect them from. The dark days of the Cold War are a good example of this. I don't believe there ever was any real risk of WW3 but the tension kept the populations of the Soviet Union and the USA scared shitless and reliant on their government's belligerence to keep them believing "the enemy" was held at bay. George Orwell, 1984, spot on! It's called a balance of power.

This is why Galtieri's administration started the Falklands war. It's interesting that in the UK, Margaret Thatchers's government were in desperate straights and highly unpopular for the deprivation and destruction deregulation had caused. The war saved her as Conservstive leader simply because she was able to present herself as the Nation's saviour, in the media. Galtieri handed her a spectacular marketing coup.

On the subject of torturing women. I have a friend who lived in Mexico for a while. She told me it was not uncommon for the police to tazer women in the genitals. Why? Because they want to. Recently here in the UK there's been a high profile case of a Policeman who arrested, raped and then murdered a young women. It's brought into the public's consciousness the vulnerability of women in police custody. The difference between a dictatorship and a democracy bought via the media is a dictatorship's control over the media prevents any real accountability of the police.

Sometimes it unnerves me to take part in the erotic fun we enjoy here on CF when I know perfectly well that fantasy persecution of those who want it, by those who want to do it, is only different from the real horror by a few degrees of perception.

I'm going to read your reply again. I enjoyed it. Sorry if you have to look up any of the words in mine!

Hello KurvyKate,

don't worry, because I sometimes understand so few English that I would never have remarked if something you wrote was ever "frivolous and ill considered". ;)

Concerning "the subject of torturing women", there is something which I will never really understand with me / myself. I think, in this thread I once wrote in a rather funny style how I am wondering my whole life about the relationships between men and women and probably there will never be an easy way to get out of this problem.

On the one hand, I always liked to help women with any kind of problems they might have had and almost all women in my life liked me for this behaviour. Some of my male friends call me in a funny-pejorative mix "Frauenversteher" ( = "Women-Understander", a man who is always on the side of women and always understands them or pretends to understand them in order to be loved by them).

On the other hand, I really like to see women in problems because I am then "the hero" who could help them out of their problems. I think, when I was still a school-boy, I once or twice caused a little problem for two girls in sports in order to be the first who could also help them out in order to be liked or loved by them.
I really always try to be as friendly as possible but I have also already met women who told me that I am simply too friendly. Even I do not always know where there is the border of / or between too much friendliness or too much "male courtship behaviour".

When I am really in love with a woman, everything can become even worse because some expected me to become jealous and possessive, others not.
I must admit, I then would like to have this woman "under control" and I can understand why then so many men would like to tie their wife sometimes to their bed. On the other hand, this kind of jealousy can also become "torture" for both and in the worst case, this can end in a real tragedy.
I just remember the headlines-making case of the famous daughter of an even more famous French actor, Marie Trintignant, daughter of Jean-Louis Trintignant, who once said publicly, she really loved her then-fiancé Bertrand Cantat more than everyone else ever, because she was convinced that no one ever loved her as much as he did.
He killed her in a tantrum of jealousy:

This is also an example why most Germans say, being in love with a French man or woman is more dangerous than being in love with Germans because "we Germans" are usually said to be "colder and more rational" in most of our habits and behaviours but you never really can be sure with an individual human being.
(I once was really in love with a French woman and this was ... hrm ...often heaven and hell at the same time! And I will never forget her because we still are wishing each other best celebrations at Easter and Christmas etc. via the internet.)

In any case, I would say, the problems between men and women are unfortunately universal problems and the social surroundings in society in which we were born make a lot of difference.

[For example, to call a young, not married woman or a young female student older than 17 / 18 in Germany "Fräulein" (= Ms. / Miss) is now usually seen as a pejorative insult, because this implies in our society that she is not taken as an adult person. In Romania only 20 years ago, it was an insult to call a young female student "Doamna" (= Mrs.) instead of "Domnisoara" (= Miss) because in the society there, "Doamna" implies the sexual experience of a married woman which a young female student was not expected to have yet. So, it was also rather an insult to her parents than to her, because this also implied that they would not have cared enough for her!]

And being a German man, I do not know if I would have ever liked to be born as a woman in more Southern states of Europe like Spain or Italy, because the numbers of "femicides" there are much higher than in Central or Northern Europe. I am only sure, I would never have liked to be born as a woman in Latin America or in an Islamic state.

This world can be a horrible place for women in many, many countries and also for this reason, I am really glad to live in a country more concerned about equality between men and women, although I am a man, because I think there can be no real justice in this world and no really peaceful society without the same rights for every human being.

Completely different topic and another question again: Does anyone here know if there are some CGI-specialists of the "trick-makers" from Star Trek, Star Wars, George Lucas, Disney etc. involved in the new videos by ABBA? One of their sons said in a video on this page ...

... that there were / are between 500 and 1000 specialists for CGI effects around the world working for this new ABBA - project and I think, this means, that it is not pure coincidence that the last minute of the video behind these pictures look like the final credits or opening credits in the latest made Star Trek or Star Wars movies or some other very high quality science fiction - movies:

The CGI ability just keeps getting better. If that was their avatars in the last few scenes of that video, I couldn't detect it.

These experts working for the ABBA revival are still refining their CGI work and it seems to me that the face of Agnetha might be a problem for them due to unknown reasons because she is the only one I did not see up to now in a bigger CGI version. I also got the feeling, the face of Björn while playing guitar had at least one wrinkle too much and the CGI experts seem to work so that they all should look in the CGI pictures like they were between 30 and 40 years old. In reality, they are now all between 70 and 75 years old, but the voices of Agnetha and Frida = Annifrid are still very beautiful and sound for me even a bit "warmer" than in my collections which are now 40 years old.
I think, ABBA will really now be the first pop group to become "immortal" in music and history for all times as long human beings exist because they are the first to make an avatar revival by something which maybe transformed into really the best "holograms" possible in this time.
I am now 58 years old and for me, this is once more like science fiction which became reality in my life time. I was a fan of them since I heard for the first time their songs "SOS" and "Mamma mia", and now, 45 years (or so) later, they are all still alive and back again with "science fiction". This is really incredible, because I remember an interview by the Swedish TV, in which Agnetha said ca. 30 years ago:
"I will never again perform in a live pop concert with so many thousands of spectators because my experience in Australia was wonderful, but it was also frightening for me. These masses of human beings who wanted to come so close as possible to us. I think, we really had a lot of luck that no one died in a crowd-stampede and I myself would die if I could ever feel responsible for being part of such a tragedy."
But now, it could be possible that the real ABBAs are sitting next years in a dome / hall in London as spectators for the premiere of their own avatars (or ABBAtars, as they call it now for their own performance) and watch themselves "artificially rejuvenated" in holograms / avatars.
This would be the first science fiction performance in pop history, wouldn't it?

In this new ABBA song, there are a few examples to see how the CGI experts worked for this and this song is again a typical ABBA masterpiece:

When they release the whole new album in some weeks, I am almost sure, this will be the greatest commercial comeback in music history!

This following song was also released during the last days, but it is a song from the 70's which was not published, but I own a special collection in which this was already included because this collection of mine also had studio tracks which were never officially released and I know this one already for 30 years:

I just saw a report about an internet site with very beautiful photos of our "Milky Way" - galaxy. These photos sometimes look like paintings but all are said to have been made with long photographic exposure times at remote places on our planet and without "light pollution" from human settlements:

So actually one of the few places in Europe where you can still see the starry sky as it actually looks without light pollution - impressive. Maybe one day I'll have the opportunity to go to Scotland and see it all with my own eyes.
There and the far north of Norway, Sweden and Finland ;)

Parts of southern France also offer good opportunities. Or the Alps. It makes a difference if you observe the stars from above the most dense (and most disturbing) part of the atmosphere.

The International Dark Sky Association list as many as 180 places world-wide now that have at least some claim to being 'dark sky places', and are making some effort to keep that way. See https://www.darksky.org/our-work/conservation/idsp/finder/

I'm thinking this thread is perhaps straying a bit away from science fiction and fantasy and into dark sky parks, but I'm sure exciting things can happen to human and other beings in peril in such places

Just a matter of imagination!

By the way, Eul, I am surprised to learn that you live on Easter Island?

How did you identify "Easter Island"?

And by the way: I am taking the terminology of "my threads" very broadly, so that we can e.g. discuss here any aspects of "human beings in peril" and looking at the skies of our planet, you can draw many conclusions about "perils".

I remember a story - which I heard about a decade ago - about a young mother and wife of a German diplomat working in Mexico City's German embassy. Her six-year-old son once asked her in the evening before going to bed: -"Mum, what are stars?" -"These are other suns like ours which you can always see in the sky at night." -"But I have never seen any of them here in the sky at night!"

She went out with him on the balcony and she was shocked, because there really were no stars to be seen because of so many city lights around them.
The next day, she asked her husband to make a holiday in a remote rural area as soon as possible to show her son some stars for the first time in his life!

Turn the pic 90 degrees counterclockwise!:roto2nuse:

Seriously, well spotted! It certainly hadn't occurred to me, that photo has been used in a lot of publicity for the Galloway Dark Sky Park - and also, I find, for somewhere called Big Bear CA - but tracking through the internet does find it's been lifted from Easter Island. A shame, really, because The Milky Way is really very striking on clear nights even where I am, on the edge of the Park. The photos in this BBC report are, I think, more genuine:

And I was already wondering where in Scotland a lying Moai comes from. Amazon didn't exist back then.
