According to the historical account, some early Slavic tribes were a real pain in ass for the late imperial Romans and then for their Byzantine successors. The first records were highly misleading: the Slavic visitors to the Empire (perhaps spies themselves), caught with no swords but playing harps instead, witnessed that their tribe was coming in peace and they loved music and they even didn't know the sword making art, and the stupid Romans and romanized Germans living at the limes trusted them. Later the Byzantine annalists noted that so called Southern Slavic tribes were in fact especially fond of predatory expeditions and they were in fact far more dangerous than their opponents could expect, because their women fought together with their male warriors, thus duplicated the combat strength of each tribe.
*
So, even if you are a mighty Byzantine please never underestimate a desperate enemy's warrior, even naked, disarmed and hammered to the wood.

I'm sure he'll see the funny side of it
Of course, he sees the funny side of it. Above all, the wonderful feeling when the pain subsides after a while.

It Was A Mistake

"How are you, Melissa, my poor cousin? Nice to see you again!
"Well, you see, you shouldn't have been married this miserable fool. It was a mistake. Yes, it was an obvious mistake. An unforgettable one. And an unforgivable one as well...
"You should have been married me. Now... Now it's too late to change your fate...
"You know, Melissa: the mistakes are to be paid for. And you will have plenty of time to be sorry for this mistake and to be properly punished...
"Merry dying, Melissa! See you tomorrow!"
