Love you dear but it isn't as proven by your own statement.
Bread = Socialism (government support of the population but also remember that it only applied to the Roman metropolitan area aka the only group of CIVILIANS close and numerous enough the threaten those in power)
Circuses = Those who are socially undesirable are violently eliminated for the entertainment of the mob (and therefore become an excellent example of what defying the authorities means).
And of course Pharaonic Egypt collected taxes in food stuffs and then fed the population during the non-growing season .... but only if they worked on government projects (See: Pyramids).
Control of any group thru fear and bribery are as old as humanity itself.
As that old saying goes - Nothing is new under the sun.

I just noticed that! Scummy behavior! Imagine if I was just getting into the scene, and only saw this one imagine, I wouldn't be able to track down the dozens of fantastic, erotic, and sexy images that Damian also made. THIS IS WHY WE SIGN OUR WORK. It's the mark of an ARTIST. Attribution is everything, I had that image on my HD for years and didn't know it was Damian's!

I know, @jucundus and I have both encountered this recently, and I dare say you have too. Scummy twats removing our signatures (and cropping off other bits around the periphery of the artwork at the same time). It’s both pointless and rude! These people should be shot, stabbed, diced and beaten flat with meat-tenderisers!
