I can give you two responses: first, a high and lofty artistic explanation, and second, a more pedestrian excuse and apology.

First, I'm really after the emotional journey and psychological drama, not blow-by-blow accuracy. Second, I have very little time or energy to write anymore, so when I have an inspiration, I just get the basics down as fast as I can and post it.

Your first explanation applies to me too, and I should probably take inspiration from the second one.

Yes, it's a good and convincing story but surely the centurion would want to know who they were spying for. So "a bit" of interrogating would have seemed natural.
But I'm sorry, I see you answered that previously and before i'd read the whole thread
