Judicial Corporal Punishment Of Women: Illustrations

Amy Hesketh in Dead But Dreaming (2013)
Love that scene ... one of her best IMO
Best whipping scene ever, IMO.
There was a risk that this scene, showing a full 36 lashes judicial flogging, could have gone 'over the top'.

But thanks to skilfull editing of the frames, this danger has been averted. What we see is the account of a judicial flogging, brought with realism. Of course, the scene emanates erotism, due to Hesketh's exposed and restrained nudity, and the inherent excitement created by the punishment. But wasn’t that, from a historical viewpoint, the goal of such judicial public punishments, after all?

So, throughout the scene, this erotism is kept down to a just level of equilibrium, by the canvas of the judicial procedure. The clerk, reading the verdict and next counting the strokes, the officials, the soldiers, the executioner, all do ‘their duty’. The care for realism (the stage, the historic uniforms and clothing) also contribute to that (OK, occasionally one can see an electric light over the balcony, but let us be forgiving).

The biggest turn off for the viewer would of course have been a ‘porn trap’, making the flogging a turn on for Heshket’s character. On the contrary, on sees Hesket’s character first fight the pain and the public humiliation, but then she gradually caves in. One can feel in the scene her loneliness, being subjected to such a humiliating and painful punishment in a country far from home, facing a hostile crowd and a blind justice. All that makes it a great scene.
