I've only shot a Thompson submachine once. The bullets are .45 Cal. (.45 inch in diameter) and thought it would kick like a mule. What a lovely gun to shoot!!!
The woman isn't bad either...

It is short-range gun using the size and weight of the bullet for the 'knock-down' instead of velocity. You don't want to be within 50 yards of it!

My Dad loved watching Combat and my Grandfather was in the Pacific.
I know about.45's!
I watched 'Combat' also (reruns in the early '60s). If the guy with the Thompson held the trigger as long as he did in the TV show the clip he had would be empty in less than a second... Miracles of Hollywood!
When I was six the only grandparent I remember died when his garage caught fire and he tried to save his pick-up truck and died in the fire. Though at 6 I had no idea what funeral was we gathered in NW Arkansas (really, I don't make everything up) and my uncle on my mom's side was there from California and had brought his .45 automatic that he was allowed to keep from serving in WWII. He let me shoot it and the scrawny 'Twig' pulled the trigger and the gun came back with the slide still open and 55 years later you can see the scar on my forehead!
