For years Professor T. H. Tree was the instructor of the Studies of Executions course. One young student would be picked to demonstrate a short drop hanging.
She would strip (willingly or by force) and be handcuffed, noosed, then be hanged by her neck until she was dead.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Students started making noise about practice so Tree took his retirement and moved back to the Tree estate.
The practice did not come to an end. Instead of students randomly selected by Professor Tree the new professor named Jollyrei teaches the course with great enthusiasm. The demonstration women volunteer to be hanged in his class instead of serving long sentences of hard labor at the reparation farm. This is where our story begins.
Professor Jollyrei calls Donna to the front of the class and introduces her to his students.
He explains Donna has volunteered to be hanged to avoid forty years of hard labor at the reparation farm. There is no parole and she had no desire to spend those years and not leaving the camp until she is 62.
Forty years of hard labor is nothing I look forward to doing. Now that I am standing below the noose I wonder if I have made the right choice.
