The prisoner has the worst of two worlds. Being aboard a navy ship, she is whipped with the navy whip, which is heaver than the one used in the prisons. In the navy, lashes were dealt out by the dozen, but in the prison system, a "Botany Bay dozen" was 25. So she will be getting at least 25 lashes with the heavy navy whip.

Barbara Moore`s family were minor aristocracy who had fallen on hard times, consequently, she was forced to take employment as a governess to the daughter of Lady Blake, a haughty, proud woman who suspected Barbara was setting her cap at Thomas her son, the heir to the title.
The vindictive woman arranged for a `stolen` valuable necklace to be found in Barbara`s belongings. A short trial followed at York Assizes, and Barbara was found guilty of theft from her employer, and despite her protests, was sentenced to be transported for fourteen years.
As the voyage progressed, Barbara`s protests became louder and ever more frequent until she was brought before the `Captain`s Table` on weekly orders.
"Young lady, insolence and rebellion are not tolerated on this ship, or in the Colony to which you are bound, and to emphasise that truth, I am going to teach you a lesson. At noon, you will be secured to a grating and the bosun will deliver twenty five lashes of the cat-o-nine-tails to you bare back. Take her away."
