Medieval Torture

Go to CruxDreams.com
I read an article recently about drama in 17th century Europe.
Apparently there was a fashion for religious drama
(encouraged firstly by the Jesuits, but followed in Protestant areas too)
acting out the martyrdoms of Christian saints,
and similar scenes from pagan Roman history -
and in some cases, the torture was performed on-stage:
an example was a German play in which a woman who'd conspired against Nero
was racked and breast-pincered on stage with the emperor watching -
it was written for and performed by schoolboys!

I think the woodcuts, especially the older ones, reflect the same popular taste,
they were typically illustrations to books of 'improving' stories on similar lines.

indeed there are

Well, all the torture, secular or religious, were a continuation of the interrogation. Moreover, secular torture were much more cruel than religious torture.

'Enhanced interrogation techniques' were used a lot more recently, but lets not get political.
As a mediaevalist, I'm inclined to point out that, while the 1000 years vaguely called 'mediaeval'
weren't all sweetness and light, the kinds of tortures and other gothic horrors usually labelled 'mediaeval'
were much more typical of the renaissance/ reformation/ early modern period, i.e. 14th - 17th centuries.
As to religious torture being less cruel - hmmm, not sure that it would have felt that way to the victims!
There was a tendency to hand victims over to the secular authorities as they were less inhibited by inconvenient scruples
(again, 'rendition' didn't stop with the middle ages)

But this is all a bit heavy, we're here to enjoy tasty pics of pretty girls being tortured in interesting ways,
keep posting 'em Stragg!

The Medieval or Renaissance - I agree with You. However, ordinary understanding differs from the opinion of specialists. The Inquisition was a very formalized and strictly limited in the ways of torture, enough of an open mind to find Malleus Maleficarum. Very often suspects to avoid secular inquiry chose the Inquisition.

Well, I'll put, maybe here some more 3D retrospect, but not now.:)

This is not heavy Eul .... I thought the distinction you were drawing between the techniques of secular and religious authorities was really interesting!!!
