Torture And Sexual Violence In The Dungeon

there's a phrase somewhere in 'Justine' where she says,
'it's the horror, not the torture -
I can bear the torture, it's the horror that's unbearable'.
In a way, I think she's right, at least a very large part of torture
is the fear of what's coming, not the actual pain.
And in literary terms, I think de Sade's writing is best when he's describing the 'horror',
when he gets on to detailed catalogues of torture and abuse like the one above,
I just find it boring and sickening.
Indeed. The fear and the horror are the most important and beautiful part. When the torture begins it's just pain and adrenaline that dilute the logic, the fear, the horror...
 
Hard to tell....is there something already inserted where that red hot iron should be going?
I think it's the rope or chain from her wrists tugging them up,
so her shoulders are forced back, her breasts pushed outwards
so conveniently for burning ...
