Judith is not having any better thoughts. She envisions she and Messaline being marched to the gallows by British soldiers the same way her ancestor was centuries ago in the province of Anjou.

Through history the hanging of women as their means of execution was a big event. Except for the witch hunts, it was rare when a woman was sentenced to death and was quite a show. The woman was often brought to the gallows naked. It was rare that a woman would commit such a crime that would earn her the death penalty. Presented naked when the woman was hanged assured the witnesses that indeed it was a woman being hanged.



Besides, she made a good exhibit when she was hanged to death.

Eventually standards were put in place how to put a prisoner to death by hanging, though it is recorded Mary Surratt, one of the conspirators of Lincoln’s assassination, took several minutes to die when she was hanged. Even with standards set, capital punishment was often the sentence handed down by local courts and they were not concerned with how a woman’s execution looked. She would be brought to the gallows naked as she was born with the jovial citizens celebrating her execution.



There was quite the show put on as the woman waited to be hanged and even if there were friends of the woman in the crowd watching from below the gallows, the spectacle of a woman being hanged was a greater draw than any friendship.



She would be hanged with care taken the drop would not break her neck and put her to death right away. Her hanging was a slow strangling to kill her but even as brutal was of executing the woman her hanging was, it can be noted- no matter how long it took- hanging the woman was effective as there is no recorded survival of a hanged woman.



In ‘modern’ times, executions were conducted shortly after midnight on the day the prisoner was to be put to death. Only the prison staff and the required number of witnesses were allowed to see the prisoner being put to death. The condemned prisoner was usually brought to gallows naked as history shows most at least urinated as they were hanged.



The union representing the sanitation crews had bargained for prisoners to be hanged naked. It made cleaning up after the executions easier.

But Tree has diverted his attention from Judith’s and Messaline’s execution.

Warden Joan Tree visits Judith before she is taken to the gallows. Joan puts her fingers under Judith’s chin and says “How long will you last when you are hanged for cattle rustling?”

Messaline is handcuffed by Gunner before she is taken to the gallows.

The driver says “The gates don’t open till five o’clock. Don’t worry- there will be plenty to see you and Messaline hanged.”

Judith is brought to a small cage and put inside it. Next to her Messaline is in a similar sized cage. Messa is equally as naked as Judith wearing only the cuffs binding her wrists behind her. Next to her, Professor Moore is trying to calm Messaline. “Messaline, the state ordered you to be hanged. I am just a university professor and no matter what I say or do, it won’t stop them from hanging you to death. It is up to you to go gracefully to gallows and die with dignity.”



The gates open and a crowd fills the parking lot. People that bought ‘VIP’ tickets were allowed to come close at the condemned women. There was no sympathy shown to Messaline and Judith. Most talked about them in third person, making crude comments about how good they would look when they were hanging by their necks. Laughter and lewd remarks were also said.

About six that evening an announcement was made for the crowd to gather around the gallows. Judith looks over to Messaline and says “They are really going to hang us. We didn’t do anything to deserve this!”



Messaline is taken from her cage. The guard turns her towards the gallows. Judith looks up at Messaline’s ass and her cuffed hands.



Messaline says “They don’t care. They just want to see us hanged.”

Judith is marched through the crowd. Besides the prison personnel, the Crux Chronicle video crew, and the state-required ‘official’ witnesses, there were five hundred people that bought tickets to see Judith and Messaline be hanged to death. From Judith’s and Messaline’s perspective the crowd seems far larger.

Warden Tree stands behind Judith and says “Wait till Messaline is on the gallows before Judith is taken up. It will make a better show.”



‘They are going to hang me and this bitch is worried about the show’ Judith thinks. Ahead of Judith, she can see Messaline being guided to the gallows. The crowd is almost jovial as Messaline is brought to the gallows.



They cheer wildly as Messaline marches past them. For Messaline the crowd is a pack of heartless bastards waiting- no, wanting to see her hanged. She gets to the base of the gallows’ stairs and hesitates a moment. The official from the Department of Corrections pushes her up the steps. “They came to witness your execution. Let’s not keep them waiting.”

Messaline looks at the crowd and the video crews surrounding the gallows. “Do they know you are about to kill me?”



“It says so on the tickets they bought” the official says. “They know we are going to hang you.”

He leads Messaline onto the gallows’ deck. She looks at the pair of empty nooses dangling from the beam.



The loops open about breast high. Messaline says “That is all you are going to drop us?”

The history of Messaline’s and Judith’s execution has some variations. Accounts differ as to which one had the noose placed around her neck first. Several accounts claim Messaline was ‘noosed’ first. Some accounts tell of her being the leader and had the noose placed around her neck before Judith wore hers.



The accounts describe the hangman feeling her up inspecting her naked body after he placed the rope around her throat. Messaline is alleged to have stood there with her hands bound behind her back and the noose insuring she had no escape as Judith was prepared to be hanged.



Several reports claimed the land owner named Tree enjoyed a drink as the women were prepared for their executions.



Other accounts say Judith had the rope put around her neck first and she stood on the gallows and watched helplessly as Messaline was brought to her noose.



It was reported two guards had to hold her still while the hangman set the noose around her throat.



Some reports state that Messa and Judith were groped by the prison staff as they stood helpless on the gallows though other reports say the staff merely checked the two women were secured and ready to be hanged.



Some accounts say once Messa and Judith were prepared to be hanged, Tree turned to Warden Joan Tree and said “These cattle rustlers are ready to be hanged. Pull the lever and let’s see how much their necks stretch.”



However the Crux Chronicle video of the execution shows Tree stepping up to Messaline and Judith and saying “It’s not my fault they are hanging you. I told them I don’t even own any cattle.”



Messaline huffs “They are hanging us just for ticket and TV revenue?”

“Seems to be that way. Catch a deep breath and say a prayer. They’re hanging you once the song is over” Tree says.

Judith and Messaline fall silent as the crowd does a horribly off-key rendition of “As We Gather At the River.”



One wonders if they were praying for their souls or cursing Tree and the Arkansas Justice System…

Their jerking bodies entertain the crowd that is totally unconcerned that each breath they take could be their last.



Five minutes after they were hanged, Messa and Judith begins to submit to the slow strangulation they have been subjected to. The difficulty of drawing each breath has become more work than their lungs can manage. The thrashing of their legs slows as the hanging of their bodies by their necks took its toll.



Messaline’s body begins its involuntary twitches and jerks. Gravity has played its part as Messaline begins to choke as the noose has closed her throat.



Her final jerks are contrasted by Judith’s last frantic jerks as her noose has just closed her throat. Hanging has become more than a horrible travesty to Judith- as now she too is choking to death!



Judith looked down. Was she staring at her trembling body as it convulsed its last or was she looking at the ground eight feet below her feet.



Judith began the last jerks and twitches her body would make.



They had been hanged just over seven minutes, though their death certificates would record their time of death as the time the trapdoor opened.

The retrospection and conclusion...

Messaline and Judith were executed under the questionable orders of Northwest Arkansas justice. The executions were conducted by the time-proven method of short-drop hangings done before the local citizens (and high-paying spectators).

When Messaline was taken from her cell to be hanged, she was hardly the model prisoner. She screamed long and loudly that her trial was a sham and the judgement against her was both vindictive and cruel.



She was still brought to the gallows that had been reconstructed in the prison staff’s parking lot. It wasn’t determined if it was being surrounded by the hostile crowd or the sight if the noose dangling before her that caused her to become the compliant but condemned prisoner.



Judith had been a more manageable prisoner. She had been brought to the gallows with minimal fuss. It was not until the prison guard was checking her restraints did she make the futile comment “You really are going to hang us!”



They were presented to the crowd that had come to see them hanged. They stood as proudly as they could as they were naked waiting for the nooses to be placed around their necks.



After the nooses were placed, Messaline and Judith stood bound and naked while a handful of state and prison officials made lengthy speeches of how the women ‘earned’ their sentence and how it was a regrettable necessity for the state to terminate their lives. Messaline caught a glimpse of Spike Sharp chatting with a video camera man. She turned to Judith and said “The sons of bitched are filming all this. Look brave and let them know we don’t deserve this but will die proudly in their hands.”



They expressed their love to each other. The crowd began a countdown just before the lever was pulled and the trapdoor fell from beneath their feet.



Any thought of dying gracefully went out when they were hanged by their necks. They jerked and thrashed violently as the ropes slowly closed around their necks. Their spits and guggles were inaudible over the cheering crowd.



Five minutes after Messaline and Judith were hanged, Professor Moore bitterly said “Well, Tree, are you happy now that you got them hanged?”

Tree replies “I had nothing to do with getting them hanged.”

At seven minutes Messaline and Judith had almost been killed by nooses they hanged from. Their leg movement had been reduced to small jerks.



On the gallows, Joan Tree turns to her assistant and said “They are just about done. Do thank the crew for an excellent pair of executions.”

Messaline and Judith would be left hanged by their necks for an hour after they last moved.



They would be taken down before midnight so Joan Tree did not have to pay the Sunday differential to the sanitation crew.
