According to article in magazine "Pour la Science" (La crucifixion, un supplice énervant - Crucifixion a evervating torture), the peculiar position of the hands that I reproduce here could have be due to the injury of the median nerve.
The nail would injure the motor part of th nerve keeping the sensitive one mostly intect. So the victime would lose the control of his thumb, forefinger and partly his long finger. He would keep the control of the two remaining fingers driven by the ulnar nerve.
