I always liked this rack I get the feeling that any victim stood before it would be under no illusion that the device was capable of breaking them. Then the rattling of the chains and the clicking sound as her limbs are pulled taught. So must physiological torture long before the real pain even starts.

I think you might mean a winch rather than a wench,
though a wench might provide the necessary pulling power?
There's indeed a fairly fine line between a Torture Bed that holds me
in a tightly stretched or spreadeagled pose, and a Rack that's set up
to gradually increase the strain.
I haven't seen, among all these thrilling torture-scenes,
any Rack designed to pull a captive's legs wider and wider apart,
a 'splitting rack'? I think the fiendish Orientals may have
thought of such a thing
