Just noticed these images Phlebas.

This one & the other of the same scene is interesting, where does it come from? I like the filthy look of the man, I am sure after being kicked & dragged around on the ground before being nailed to the cross one would look like that with filth, gravel, & bits of grass & prickly vegetation sticking to the blood & sweat, great images, pity only chest & head though!

PhilX

That's from the Emerald City TV series on NBC.

Ave fellow passion-play-friends,

here is something I found few days ago.
This passion play has to offer a typical crucifixion "play", but with (in my opinion) two hot "thieves". Seems to be from Brazil or elsewhere in south america. It covers two very different "tastes" about victims and the crucifixion scene and method is as elaborated for the "thieves" as it is for the Jesus character (who is the weakest of the three, I have to say).
The left one ("good thief") is a handsome and cute boy, the right one ("bad thief") a buzz-cut hunk with slightly hairy chest.
The acting is pretty bad, but better from the boy than from the hunk, whose voice during the nailing sounds more like from a squeaming pig than a grown man ;-)
A very nice idea is how the executioner and commanding officer showing the nails to the prisoner and the audience to frighten them.
Before you ask: no, there is no nakedness obviously, but the (short) stripping scene and the crucifixion are pretty hot in my opinion.

Nevertheless, check it out if you like a cute and hot latino boy suffering on the cross :)
If you are not sure if its worth it I am providing a few screenshots. The quality in 1080p is excellent, even if the camera focus is not always the best.

The crucifixion is going to start at (about) 01 hour:14 minutes

best regards
Ty.

Ave, fellow fans of the classic Jesus´crucifixion,

here is something else I found, which may be of interest especially if you wonder (like myself when I was younger), how in the "classic" crucifixion style (nails through palms and one through both feet folded one on top of the other) the feet could be aligned in such a way that the nail could really pierce both feet at the same location (between the second and third toe bones) so that no bones would be broken.

The source of this clip is an unknown organisation for multimedia support of christian faith. The actor playing Jesus has to wear an incredibly bad wig but the crucifixion/nailing scene is not bad at all.

Even if my favorite "nailing of the feet" scene is still the one from the "Killing Jesus" movie, this one comes close.
Interesting is here especially that the ankles are bound with rope, so that the victim could not kick or struggle and how the feet are put on the pole, held tight and aligned when the spike is being positioned. In my opinion thats the best (and most convincing) depiction of this nailing style I have ever seen. Its very short, but if you watch it in still pics or slow motion you can see how good it really is.

The rest of the clip has nothing outstanding to offer, there are even continuity errors when the Jesus actor has to stand on some type of "footrest", while in the nailing scene you see the feet getting nailed directly to the stipes.
Nevertheless, check it out for a really good "nailing of the feet sequence" in "classic style", from about minute 3:10 to 3:45 (720p, excellent quality)

best regards
Ty.

Yeah it's a decent effort I guess, pity the foot nail wobbled! I suppose the actor made some effort in expressing pain, but in every crucifixion film I have seen not once has the actor really struggled desperately in utter agony. Until exhaustion sets in I think the writhing and lungeing about would have been pretty violent.

Lastly the foot on foot one nail feet fixing is something I doubt, it answers a theological need for the number three to get involved, but even with the ankles bound by rope as in this film placing one foot above the other & hoping that the foot underneath will be neatly there in position once the top foot is spiked is a bit optimistic. The reaction against the pain would be for the feet to be moved around in an attempt to get away (kicking) albeit with the legs held restricted by the rope.

I agree, the single nail through both feet thing seems pretty far-fetched. Just looking at the physics, I don't believe it was possible. I did a cantilever beam analysis, modeling it based on a 150 pound victim, and using the mechanical properties of wrought iron like the Romans had. It showed that a square nail would have had to have been around 0.4 inches square where it entered the face of the timber.

Of course Roman nails were tapered, so I used pictures of some I took in the British Museum in London and some pictures of nails recovered at Inchtuthil in Scotland to estimate the taper. Looks like a nail like that would have tapered to about 0.75 inches square just below the head. That would have really wrecked a foot and probably substantially shortened the time a victim would last on the cross, not what the Romans apparently had in mind.

And then there's Plautus, in his play "The Mostellaria." where he mentions that four nails were used in a crucifixion. And unlike all of those painters of religious art, he had probably witnessed a number of crucifixions.

Here are some extreme painful impressions from an animated "splatter" movie, each of the three pairs of feet are nailed with one single nail only
nailing hands: minute 4:50-5:05
nailing feet: minute 5:20-5:50
