Asstr is gone :((

I don't wish to sound patronisong, or smug or whatever, but there is a reason that whenever I find anything I like, I download it to my own hard drive so that I can keep it and make backups of it.

There's a very old saying in the IT world, that there are only two kinds of computer users out there - those who have backups and those who wish they had backups...

Absolutely everything on the internet could go away at any time and without any warning, so I guess the golden rule is that if you like it, then save it...

i always saved (on my notebook’s hard drive, not on a cloud, and without additional backups) almost everything that I need and even don’t need, but that may come in handy afterward. however afterward i could hardly find there anything worthwhile :) nonetheless, for a long time everything was fine until once a few years ago i decided to unload the hard drive and copied my entire thematic archive for 20+ years - texts, pics, movies – to a terabyte external drive. on the same evening, a cat threw a heavy book off the shelf onto this disk, and the disk died forever with the entire archive. so i lost a huge piece of my symbolic past. what did solomon say about vanity?..

of course, something - not all - on that disk probably could be restored but with that thematic content as our one (more than very harsh) nobody usually seeks help from it-specialists.

For many of us the wonderful stories on asstr.org are a treasure. I believe in saving stories to my hard drive AND my external backup hard drive.

Nevertheless, there are so many stories in asstr, that I also enjoy just plain old... browsing.

Fortunately, you can still do that at the mirror site and it's pretty fast:

Mirror of asstr.org

Enjoy!

Thanks, @Tiredny -- that's a useful link. It doesn't seem to be a complete mirror, though, or else it hasn't been well-indexed by search engines. Searching on "site:asstr.org" gives many more hits than the same search terms on "site:asstr.xyz". Of course, the asstr.org hits are all dead now, unfortunately.

Really sad that such a great site went and died. I read many stories there twenty years ago, which influenced my own writing. I used to write in my native language, but have tried writing in English lately and published a couple of stories on Storiesonline.net. It's not the same as ASSTR, though, which didn't limit freedom of expression nearly as much.

One other option I neglected to mention is that if you do a google search like:

Reformatory site:asstr.org/files

You get a listing of the files on the "dead" site that contain "reformatory". Do not click on the links, because the site is... dead! Instead, click on the three dots immediately after the link and choose 'cached'. For many of the files google has a 'cached image' that you can copy and paste.

Enjoy!
