Nice photos, but well ... let's say very carefully ... in 1936 many people in the world did not actually, in the formality of the existing powers, get to have recognition of their own "Nation" (rather they were colonies subservient to other nations) and so the representation of "All Nations" does seem a bit skewed. From "Nudes Of All Nations" (1936)
Really, the word "ethnicity" should be used here, not "nation", but probably, photographers and publishers of that time did not attach importance to this difference.Nice photos, but well ... let's say very carefully ... in 1936 many people in the world did not actually, in the formality of the existing powers, get to have recognition of their own "Nation" (rather they were colonies subservient to other nations) and so the representation of "All Nations" does seem a bit skewed.
Actually if you try to read it in terms of ethnicity it gets even more ridiculousReally, the word "ethnicity" should be used here, not "nation", but probably, photographers and publishers of that time did not attach importance to this difference.
Yes, you are a strict critic.Actually if you try to read it in terms of ethnicity it gets even more ridiculous
Austrian, German, Yugoslav, Czechoslovak aren't/weren't ethnicities. (Nor for a fact is American). And 'quadroon' certainly isn't ... it's mostly just models from various European localities with a few "exotics" tacked on that of course come at the end of the series. And it's built on concentric circles focused on the British Empire ... it starts out with English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, New Zealander .... and that is more than the entire Asian continent gets...
Mind you if anything I'm known as a critic of overblown politcial correctness. But this is really just an almost comical example of Anglocentrism sitting on top of Eurocentrism. It really isn't representative of nations or ethnicities. And to be honest what it mostly reflects probably is just on part of the photographer(s), "where can we go and photograph naked girls without too much trouble".
Still they are very nice pics and I love the photography of the period.
A couple of these poor girls look chilly...
Now is it just me, or doesn't it seem a waste not to tie her arms to those railings so she's forced into a crouch and used for some nefarious means?Onorin 4-1
Hmmm, how much again?Blast from the past: Immediately upon hiring me, the modeling agency scheduled me for a simple photoshoot. The purpose was to get some professional quality shots for the section of the agency's website where the various girls are "advertised." All of the girls are shown wearing short dresses and skimpy bikinis. Clients can thus scan the agency's portfolio and choose the girls they want to hire. I was thrilled to finally be pursuing this career, though a bit nervous being in front of the camera for the first time. As I posed, lifting my arms above my head as instructed to emphasize my figure, it occurred to me that my body was basically being put up for sale. I imagine most woman would find this to be degrading. But I found it extremely exciting and sexually arousing.
