This time Barbara”s misdeeds were not going to be covered up by her powerful family. Her countless violations of the law had finally exhausted their patience.

After careful deliberation, the Moore family had no choice but to conclude that she’d gone too far, being caught attempting to steal a brooch from a friend's house. They would no longer intervene on her behalf. It was time that she be taught a lesson, one she wouldn't soon forget.

It was decided she should be punished exactly like a common thief would be. and was therefore turned over to the authorities, where she was sentenced to be publicly whipped in the town square, stripped naked to her hips and be given forty lashes, well laid on upon her bare back. She then was to be transported to the colonies for a period of seven years, to labor as a common bond servant.

She was soon to experience what this lack of her high-born family’s protection would mean, on top of the scaffold, completely bared to her waist, breasts exposed to the crowds gaze, arms shackled to the post like any other common thief or bawd, to feel the agony of forty lashes wrapped around her torso.

And her own family would be there to personally witness it, publicly signaling their complete approval of her fate.... *
