Answering your question, about the need for seat belts.

JIM CLARK

The farmer from Scotland was an outstanding talent and the greatest driver of his epoque. During the sixties he competed very often, but not regularly in the Formula 2 events, because he was also involved in Indianapolis 500, the Tasman Series in Australia and New Zealand and British Touring Car Racing. For this reason it is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of international motorsport, that this extraordinary celebrity was killed in a Formula 2 race of minor personal importance at German Hockenheim at the beginning of april, 1968. The reason for the accident was speculated about for a long time, but there are important hints, that the crash had been caused by a slow puncture.

Can't hit 'like', TC, but I appreciate the post.

Many people (both engineers and metallurgist) think the wreck was caused by inadequate stress points where the suspension tied to the monocuque chassis. The founder of Lotus, Colin Chapman, believed (correctly) weight is the enemy of speed but many believe he sacrificed strength to save ounces without regard to safety...

No fire-suit, no seat-belts, no roll bar protecting his head, no power-steering, and doing drifts with cars parked along the side of the road with a race car that has tires barely wider than my '69 Beetle had...

Did the man have massive balls or no brain???

I go with the former...

In NASCAR they have basically gone to a 'formula' style racing and at Daytona and Talladega have what they call 'restrictor plate' racing that cuts the power from 800 HP to about 450 HP because the cars were getting to damn fast. After he retired from driving St. Louis native Rusty Wallace convinced a NASCAR team, Talladega Raceway, and Goodyear Tire to try a go at Talladega without the 'plate'. After his third lap around the oval he lifted and coasted the 2.66 miles to the pits. He was shaking when he got out of the car and said the car was still picking up speed. He had a full roll-cage surrounding him, a six-point harness holding him in his seat, a full fire suit, and dozens of rescue teams positioned around the track..

I think Fangio would have called Rusty a 'pussy'.

Goodnight all....

So leading up to the Bathurst 12 hour most of the sports car marques brought out road-registerable versions of the race cars.
Each marque was invited to attempt the Mt Panorama lap record for road cars but only one took up the challenge.......Mercedes with their AMG GT R with five-time German touring car champion Bernd Schneider setting a 2 min 16.5 second lap. To put it into perspective that is about 10 seconds slower than the best of the V8 supercars.

Take a ride.

The GT R is powered by a 430kw version of AMG's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and features wider, larger wheels wrapped in sticky, race-style tyres, re-tuned suspension and improved aerodynamics.

The car is due to arrive in Australia from mid year at a price of A$349,000 (plus on-road costs) - a $50k premium over the GT S.

Why Pp much prefers to drive by the seat of His pants in His 46 year old LBSC (wind in the hair, 3 point belt only, no roll bar, no traction control, no ABS braking, 175/70R14 tyres on knock-on wire spoke wheels) than ride in His mate's Aston Martin Vantage.

Everything is in the driver's hands and feet. Everything comes down to the nut holding the steering wheel :D.

Some cars and a motor cycle!

Just a little bit of noise courtesy of Goodwood Road and Racing's recent members' weekend in memory of the late, great John Surtees who died on 10th March.

He is the only person to win World Championships on both two and four wheels having been a four-time 500cc motorcycle World Champion – winning that title in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 – and the Formula One World Champion in 1964.

The first and last blasts come from a Team Surtees car that bears the names J Surtees and G Hill.

Didn't he build his own cars also?
