The insanity is spreading!

Many retailers now start their Black Friday sales on Thursday (Thanksgiving) afternoon. So now, the tradition of gathering together with family and friends....

has become a tradition of grabbing a quick bite then gathering at the stores with a bunch of strangers to take advantage of sales that really aren't any better than what you could get later in the Xmas season.

Naraku does not go near a store on Black Friday. If he did, he would want someone saving his parking space.

I have the impression that Thanksgiving is actually the US equivalent of Christmas, which is when we non Americans gather together in family groups and eat turkey etc, is that true?

Black Friday sounds horrendous. I love a bargain, but I wouldn't go near those crowds in a fit!

Actually, we often eat turkey on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day! Thanksgiving day in the US commemorates the celebration the Pilgrims had together with the local Indians following their first harvest. It was a time to thank God for the harvest, without which they might have starved through the winter. There's really no connection with Christmas other than it's also the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

Black Friday is for a special kind of masochist in my opinion! You won't catch me out shopping that day and I'll probably do most everything I can on line instead.

So you get two Christmases in effect!
Do families come together more at Thanksgiving or Christmas? Which one takes precedence?

Being summer here, my Christmas is more like this - without the nudity unfortunately :(

I would say most families come together evenly on both Holidays.

As I think about it, we had huge Thanksgivings with friends and immediate family during my 22 years in Saudi Arabia, plus we celebrated both US and Canadian Thanksgivings. Any excuse for a party! Christmas was mostly immediate family there, had to keep it low key because the religious police would come down on you for any overt display of Christian celebration.

In the years since I came back to the US in 2013, we have had small Thanksgiving dinners, only immediate family. Since all of our children and grandchildren have their own lives and families, they are sometimes here and sometimes with spouses' parents and grandparents. By the time you get down to our great-grandchildren, they have a lot of relatives other than us competing for their time!

There will only be five of us here for Thanksgiving, and maybe the same number or less for Christmas. But I know we will get a lot of phone calls from friends and relatives wishing us a merry Christmas and sending love our way. And those will come from dear friends all over the world - even our Muslim Saudi friends always call at Christmas. All in all, not bad! :)

Christmas is for spending time with the people you love. Thanksgiving is for spending time with extended family. And drinking a lot. And by the way, there are going to be in line on Wednesday for Black Friday. So be smart and shop on cyber Monday, which is this next Monday.

I wondered if that was it. So Thanksgiving is more the family celebration. For us here in Oz and in Britain that's Christmas.

we celebrated both US and Canadian Thanksgivings.

Canada has its own thanksgiving? I didn't know that. Of course I haven't watched a lot of Canadian TV - well there was that show with the giraffe, Polka Dot Shorts? (actually, he was a "green kangaroo-like animal with yellow hair") ah the life of a parent

None of the characters in that show went out nude in public, as far as I remember

I fear for the day that we celebrate Thanksgiving "because it's fun" (my daughter's reason for celebrating Halloween, a completely and recently imported tradition in this country)

Halloween is fun. St. Patrick's day is fun. Thanksgiving is overrated as all hell. Food is dry, you're around a few people who are family but are also annoying, and someone will want to leave dinner early to either see a movie or get in line for Black Friday. Which leads to bickering and fights. Thanksgiving is tedious. Though the Chargers are playing, which should be fun. (Sorry, more American nonsense)

Well, I knew they were planning to replace plastic with face recognition,
but didn't know they'd be demanding additional evidence :p
(makes you wonder what men will have to show )
