In The Serpent's Eye, I have a couple of black guys as executioner's helpers, crucifying Lucilla and then Sabina. They act like they enjoy their work.
There's also a black girl in the background among the onlookers who enjoys watching crucifixions.
And there are white guys among the executioners and helpers, too. And lots of white folks watching. I viewed that as something like the reality of ancient Rome - some Nubians, Ethiopians, etc. there at that time, probably almost all either slaves or freedmen. But there weren't likely to be all that many. The two Nubian executioner's helpers are slaves; the nameless black girl in the crowd might be too, but she could be free as well. All of the people in that crowd, however, white and black, have come to watch a naked girl get nailed to a cross and to enjoy her agony as she struggles once they have raised her.
So is The Serpent's Eye racist because it has a couple of black guys abusing a white girl? FYI, I am not a racist, but neither do I support diversity for diversity's sake. I hope we are not going to get into some kind of witch hunt here to label stories or art as racist. We have enough of that going on in real life without bringing it into this fantasy world.
