Jastrow's Pic of the Day

Thursday, August 30, 2018–Day 240. Here’s a new emulation of a Yusseby drawing that shows water being given to a woman nailed to a cross. I’ve did an earlier version of this years ago, but thought I would try it once again. I call it "Quenching Her Thirst".

I’m very glad you revisited this one Jas. Lots. You captured the look of the bewildered and terrified kid in Yusseby's original, and I rather like the way you have the guy on the right not seeming to reach for the waterskin, but copping an unambiguous feel. :very_hot:

Great. F-word. Job.

It would be a mistake to attribute the act of giving water to a person on a cross to be an act of kindness or mercy, although they might desperately crave it. Instead, it would only prolong their suffering.

Nice emulation of a nice Yusebby, Jas.

I think it's much more of a mix than you suggest above. It is a tension, a bind. The crucified victim desperately wants that drink, needs that drink, she can't help herself her body demands it. Yet as you say it only prolongs suffering. Catch 22. But what about the bystander? What about that person who is watching, who takes pity on the suffering woman, who offers water out of a desire to help. Kindness and cruelty at the same time?
I wrote a very short story about this once a long time ago, I'll try and dig it up.

Friday, August 31, 2018–Day 241. We end the month of August with an experiment. I’ve been playing around with a blend of black and white and color images. Steven Spielberg did something like this in "Schindler’s List" which was filmed in black and white. The only color in the entire film is one girl in a red coat who appears in the powerful scenes of the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto. In this reworking of a favorite image called "Crowded", I stripped out all the color and blurred the background leaving only the girl on the cross in full sharpness and color. I wanted to show that in the pain of what she was experience, her brain was shutting down and all she could focus on were painful sensations she she was experiencing. It became her entire world and everything else–the people and their taunts were drowned out by her pain. I don’t know if it works but it was worth a try. I call the new image, "Only the Pain".

When I look at this in a darkened room, the full size image of the suffering girl's body on my tablet's screen appears frozen mid-writhe, a vivid splash of color against grey, against black. The effect is quite disquieting.

I like the original and I like this one, Jas. Lots.

September 1, 2018–Day 242. "The light of day was fading from the sky and night was quickly falling. She was exhausted, but now the prospect of being plunged into the inky darkness of the night terrified her. She wondered how much more of this she could endure. Alone, exposed, in agony and utterly helpless, she wondered what terrors awiated her in the inky blackness. She’d soon know...." From 2012 and entitled, "Forest Dance."

Nibelungen crucifixion? Brunnhilde at the cross?

Sunday, September 2, 2018–Day 243. A while back, I promised that I would post the 2012 set that I call "The Ginger Girl". These were just studies with no post production work on them. I’ll post them over the next few days. Here’s the first one.

She has the look of a comely Irish colleen. So much that I was going to post the song "Pretty Irish Girl" from "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," but the tie to the thread is molecularly thin.

What the hell.

Monday, September 3, 2018–Day 244. Since it is a holiday here in States, I’m going to go ahead and post the next two images from the "Ginger Girl" series. Here are Gingercrux 2 and 3. l. (For reference the 3 holidays are: 1. "Oh boy, Summer’s Starting!" 2. "It’s the Middle of Summer, Damn it’s HOT!" and 3. "Oh shit, Summer’s Over. Let’s Play Football!")

On the Paleolithic TV show "My Three Sons," Uncle Charlie the family cook once sang a nonsense ditty:

Oh if she isn’t an Irish lass,
Oh if she isn’t an Irish lass,
Oh if she isn’t an Irish lass . . .

Why couldn’t she be Greek?

I’ve been thinking of said ditty since you started this set, Jas. Why on Earth I still remember it defies analysis.

But you've already done Greek Girls, haven’t you?

Tuesday, September 4, 2018–Day 244. Here are 2 more from the "Ginger Girl" series-- Gingercrux 4 and 5. I do like the hairless look, but I also think a nice ginger fire-crotch would have been interesting, as well. By the way, Apostate, the background in these pictures is not in Ireland, but in Scotland. Both beautiful places and home to very beautiful women.
