All wooden ships require constant repair and replacement even while still active. This is one of the disadvantages of wood. Victory had actually be declared unseaworthy in 1796, but the urgent need for ships of the line led to her being repaired and put back into service three years later. Both Victory and Constitution have rebuilt and reconstructed over the years and more work is going to be needed.
The latest plan for repair of Victory involves using Scottish elm.

It raises interesting questions about continuity and authenticity. Yes this is the ship that nelson commanded, but very little of it is original to that time.

On a different note, some things are a complete mystery to me
