Wow, no, I think you're taking a giant leap here. I never considered this to be a totalitarian government scenario; it's just an alternate-reality United States where public executions never were dispensed with. We had public hangings in the US up until 1936 when a crowd of 20,000 came out to see the last hanging in Kentucky. Times changed, and public executions were outlawed state by state. In Ellie's version of the United States, the attitude toward public executions never changed, and for the media there was money to be made. But a totalitarian government imposing public crucifixion on its people, terrorizing them into working and being productive, no, I never intended that at all, not in my wildest dreams.
Yes I know, you certainly didn't describe it like that. And I don't want to imply that you did. But this alternate universe of yours isn't as far away from ours in the sense that media nowadays play a very important role in how we think and what we do. And in our world the female body is already used as a productivity enhancing object. With ready available porn on the web on the one hand and the unavailable bodies in reality (think me2) on the other hand, men (and women themselves) are coerced to be productive and reproductive, without changing the status quo of the powerbalance. It doesn't require a totalitarian system to implement that.
In your atlernative reality, cruxforum isn't in a corner of the media, hidden away from view, it's become mainstream media. That's actually the only difference, right?

In Ellie's reality, the use of crucifixion as capital punishment did not end during Constantine's reign, it continued to present day, passed on through the countries descended from and influenced by Roman rule. However, technology like that PIC line IV used to keep a victim hydrated, provide nourishment and drugs made it possible to reliably prolong their suffering for days. The GACP (Generally Accepted Crucifixion Practices manual - a takeoff on the Generally Accepted Accounting Practices manuals that accountants use) is a body of knowledge and instruction for performing crucifixions, the result of centuries of practice and lessons learned from thousands of crucifixions together with modern knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medicine. It's now part of the US penal code - the judge quotes it while sentencing Ellie.

The bottom line is crucifixion is commonplace, accepted punishment for those criminals who deserve the worst punishment, like Ellie. Nobody in her world thinks this is unacceptable. Nudity is part of the punishment and as readily accepted in that context as a string bikini is on the beach. This story is a satire on the way the media would cover an event like this, all the stupid questions the news reporter asks, how brazen he is.

I don't really understand this. "Sex sells" is a common saying because it's used to grab our attention and influence our thinking. Productivity, I would think it would be such a distraction that productivity would be reduced. I know it is around here!
