As the apprentice begins to run back, the head carnifex shouts out. "Hey kid, don't hurry. Take Your time."

The kid looks back, almost tripping over his feet. "Uh, okay boss, sure."

The two experienced executioners trade knowing glances. "Should we tell him later we 'lost' the nails on purpose?"

"Nah. Let's just keep making our 'mistake' for as long as we can."

I enjoy images like this because it shows that ALL women must live in fear of the agony of crucifixion, not just the pretty ones or the twenty somethings, ALL of them. To the men she might be invisible, but to the women, she is a billboard, telling them exactly the cruel fate that awaits them if they step out of line.
 
In yesterday’s Washington Post (Easter) was an article on Roman crucifixions. Some highlights from the story:

“Josephus the ancient Jewish historian reported that the Roman troops crucified as many as 500 Jews a day during the Jewish revolts in A.D. 1st century.

“The Romans sometimes lashed victims to the cross with ropes more often than nails which were so precious that it’s believed the Romans pulled them out and used them again.

“Archeologists have found remains of a person [no gender given] who was crucified in England. They found an iron nail in the heel bone adhering to wood.

An ancient graffito found in Pateoli, Italy depicted a woman crucified with the name Alkimila.”
 
Don't forget any blacksmith made them re-usable :p
