MMA in the 19th century?
actually in the 18th century. The first set of rules was published on August 16th, 1743 by Jack Broughton, an english bare-knukle boxer after the death of one of his opponents.
The London Prize Ring Rules were then used till 1888 when the rules set by Marquess of Queensberry were applied. Reading the rules (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Prize_Ring_Rules) you get an idea of what boxing was before,,,
