The long line of sacrificial maidens, which stretched back into the temple's main hall, listened in silence to the priestess' booming voice as she repeated her chant of supplication each time one of the women was presented and fed to the creature. Acolytes guarded both ends of the procession, but there was clearly no risk: some of the offerings quietly wept, some hung their heads, some simply stared ahead with a listless look, but all had accepted and were resigned to their fate. And so, slowly, one by one, they marched obediently to their own doom....

it happened
