among other things....:devil:It might be 2019 but the millennial Romans have not lost their taste for blood in their "arenas" Like I said, I've though about how this would go down for a while...

OH, anything goes...like in the Roman chariot races....you can do what you want to your opponents?

shorts? And the ability to keep their prize money. This would be an "enlightened" empire. The free women's category would look similar to today. The slavegirl category would be very different...
is there a free women category???????????????? are there free women in that sport?

Thinking of Roman gladiatorial combats, your cyclists would be allowed - no, expected - to use weapons,
probably spears, javelins and the like.

Free women could have the advantage of protective clothing, but the more armour the more weight of course
(any clothes will be hot and sweaty under the blazing sun),
and nimble slaves could use nets or lassoos, like the naked reticularae fighting heavily-armed gladiators.

Slaves would be chained to their mounts, if they crash they'll be dragged along on the sand and ripped to ribbons
(cf chariot race in Ben Hur).

Wild beasts - wolves, lions, mad bulls etc. - released into the arena during the race would liven things up!

Bikes could be equipped with protruding axles that end in whirling blades.....didn't the chariot wheels in Ben Hur have something like that? Rival bikers who get too close might be slashed, forced to crash and be dragged along.

And perhaps some harrowing obstacles in the path of the race.....pits full of wild beasts that bikers must run up ramps and jump over .... bags of sand that swing back and forth in the path of the bikes that might bring unwary bikers down .... gauntlets where machines or archers fire volleys of arrows across the bikers' path .... stretches of quicksand or fiery hot coals ..... suddenly appearing decapitating cords stretching across the trail ... so many ways to create mayhem amongst the half-naked clusters of fiercely pedaling competitors.

but they are so sweet and oh so vulnerable....................perhaps they need Erins help against all those brute onlookers

So many ideas....so little time... Though in my head the modern Rome will have advanced much like our society (but with better tech since they didn't go through that pesky dark age). The age of the gladiator, wild animals, and massive public bloodbaths are but an embarrassing chapter in the history books for the now enlightened empire. Besides, slavegirls with the required VO2 max and hematocrit levels to compete at this level are so rare you can't go around "losing" them in the way's Barb and Eul so gleefully describe.:p (though it does give me inspiration for a story about old fashioned Roman gladiatrixs) These slaves are worth lot's of money indeed for the crowds they bring and the extensive wagering system built up around them. (a hold over from the arena days...) Somethings don't change though...the men's race draws most of the attention and the slavegirl category the profits, but the free women don't get nearly the level of respect they feel they deserve....
