The next scene is described in the script as follows:

Antius has placed the point of the nail against Sabina’s right foot. He draws his hammer back for the first blow. Sabina looks down in horror. Most of the crowd watch Antius in anticipation, but the redhead and friend (V4-2 and V4-10) watch Sabina’s face for her reaction when the hammer strikes.​

For most, the action is at Sabina's feet and that's what they are watching. The two laughing women, whom I designate as V4-2 and V4-10 in my Poser scene, are looking at Sabina's face and her expression of panic. A few others are, too, but not many. For some, it could be that it's easier to look at a foot or her crotch rather than the face of a woman being crucified.

But everyone wants to see her reaction when the nail pierces her foot. The cornu is less than a foot beneath her; might she collapse at the shock of that nail entering her foot and fall on the point of that cornu? Sabina is very much aware of what will happen if she should suddenly drop and she is terrified of having that wooden point forced into her vagina.

Here are maybe the top ten from this set. As always, I have a lot of renders, 38 from this scene but it's too much to show them all here.

Its the surrounding scene and the details within that make this so interesting. Endless pics of naked women on crosses, good as they are, do nothing for me. This however is an entire scenario laid out in realistic detail. The level of fascination, the aforementioned callousness really hit the spot. Though you could have let the poor girl ride that thing for a while before you nailed her.
You mean have her roped to the cross for a while?
 
Though i guess the fact that they denied her that is part of the story. Part of the punishment. Very cruel!
I never heard of a scenario where the Romans did something like that, and I have a lot of reference material on the subject. Nothing like that ever mentioned in Cook's Crucifixion in the Mediterranean World, and it covers a lot. Of course, out of the tens or hundreds of thousands of crucifixions that took place, many things might have happened. However, I will guarantee you that the agonized Sabina will do as much writhing and dancing on the nails for us as she ever would were she tied with ropes.

Yes there is! You want to write a crux story, there are all kinds of scenarios for real ones that actually happened plus lots of information from classical sources. When I bought it, the book was only available in hard cover and cost almost $200. Absolutely. Several ancient writers mentioned a pointed seat extending between the victim's legs on which he could rest when his torment drove him to avail himself of it. Justin Martyr described it as being like a rhinoceros horn. I don't think this referred to its size but to the fact that it projected upward, as does the horn of a rhinoceros. If it was particularly large or sharp, a victim might manage to use it to shorten his time on the cross through blood loss, something the Romans were not likely to allow. Because it was compared to a horn, we refer to it using the Latin word for horn, cornu. Resting on it forced the victim to allow it to enter his or her body. Men had only one hole to fit over its point, while women had two to choose from. For either sex it was considered utterly humiliating, usually a last resort when the agony became too great.

Sabina's cornu is my interpretation of what it might have been like. It's carved out of a forked branch. You would probably have to bend the upward-pointing part back while it was green and tie it to form it into that shape, but woodworkers from ancient times up through the nineteenth century often made use of limbs that were of an approximate shape they needed, bending them while green or steaming them to bend if the wood was already dry. Sabina's cornu fits into an augered hole in the cross, set at a height that will accommodate most victims and held in place by a wedge driven beneath. I don't have any idea whether this is the way the Romans did it but it's a way that uses techniques they often employed.

The blow of the hammer triggers an instant reaction in Sabina's naked, sweaty body, tensely anticipating what was coming. Her body twists and writhes in agony and panic at the shock, desperately trying to take her weight off of her right foot, pull it away, anything. But it is already too late, even if she could have moved her foot. Her hips are twisted and angled to shift her weight onto her left leg, her last support that provides some relief. She screams frantically. Here are the top ten renders from this set, a difficult choice:

A note for the other 3D artists: I created all these scenes working backwards from Scene 19a, the first scene I created when I was thinking about the action I wanted. Swinging a hammer the way Antius has to from his knees in this scene takes bends and twists in the whole upper body, not just the arm holding the hammer.

The easiest way I've found to model this is act it out and examine what you do. I'm personally very familiar with swinging a hammer this way so I don't normally think about it. My body does it using muscle memory. So I get down on my knees and swing the hammer in slow motion and watch what I do, then model that in the Antius character. The very last motion is a side-to-side bend of the wrist to bring the hammer flat against the nail head.

I pose Antius with the hammer against the nail first, as it is in this scene. Once you have that, it's easy to pull the hammer back realistically for the scenes where he's drawn back preparing to swing and strike the nail.

I did quite a few scenes I wasn't happy with. I did one just the other day where Antius is reaching over Sabina to nail her titulus in place. They are touching, so their poses have to match up. After I got it done, I realized Sabina's back wasn't bent back far enough, so had to redo that and both of their poses. A little time-consuming. It's always a question of how to do these poses to get everything to look the way you want.

In Scene 17x3, Antius has drawn his hammer back, preparing to deliver another blow to the nail in Sabina's right foot. Here's what the script says this scene should show:

Antius draws back to hit the nail again. It is already driven about halfway down. Sabina’s eyes roll back, she is close to fainting but struggling to stay conscious, afraid of dropping on the cornu. Onlookers still mostly watch Antius and Sabina’s foot. Redhead and friend still talking.​

Every blow of the hammer is a shock of agony for Sabina, the nail tearing the wound wider, the rough iron rasping through torn flesh and nerves. In the renders that show her face, you can see that her eyes are rolled back, showing that she is struggling on the edge of unconsciousness already. Another stroke of the hammer might push her right over that edge and slumping down onto the cornu.
