Overdue for a bump, artists' models

How come it is "art" if you do it in front of an "artist" and porn if you do it in a magazine or on the internet?

Asked my mom (who is very conventional) that question once (my stepfather was a fairly successful artist) and would have gotten thrown out of the family if my brother wasn't rolling on the floor laughing after I asked the question.

Never did get an answer by the way.

I know of an artist who does pin up art and he does in the nude and with ladies who wear clothes but with a very sexual appeal to it. I consider it art because of how he styles it and the medium he uses (pencil, chalk, and oil paint). I asked him to do a personal project for me which was done in pencil and chalk. It was a Star Wars character Mara Jade. You can see it on his website: https://www.lorenzosperlonga.com/

I'm not arguing I'm questioning. So in your mind the medium makes it art, but the exact same pose in say photography doesn't? So is Vargas art or porn?

By the way the places my stepfather did nude scenes was a model in an art class (when he was young) or when in art class producing a nude of a model.

Modelling is such hard work! :p
My GF did model for the local art class when younger, though never nude. She did find it hard work as an artist's model has to hold the pose for a much longer time than when modelling for a photographer. In fact the model needs to take breaks at intervals, before getting back into the same pose as near as possible.
She comments that some of the would-be artists did draw her nude, even though she really wore a miniskirt and tee-shirt.

Yes, although I've never done it myself, I've known a few who have and I've no doubt it really is a demanding job.

I also know of another artist who uses photography of nudes which I also consider art https://www.acinematicdisaster.com/prints
I would consider Vargas art.

My brother's GF is an actress (as well as having a 6 figure REAL job) and she recently was in filming (they still call it that) for 12 hours for 2x1 hour Youtube shows, so yes the models\actresses are working hard.

I know how long it took my stepdad to produce a work of art he felt was ready for publication (he worked in several mediums).

And I have an uncle who was once a news photographer who also worked very hard top get the shot.

And I happen to know two professional (one appeared as a Penthouse Centerfold) porn actresses and they also work damn hard.

My degree is in radio\TV and I remember how hard we worked all semester to produce those shows.

Everybody is working hard, no denying that.

And we have a ton of successful actors and actresses who do nude and even sex scenes for very popular entertainment (looking at you GoT and Rome) shows.

Factually both have hard working people trying to earn a living, doing what they do of their own volition (mostly) and not forcing anybody to consume what they produce.

Yet we perceive some to be "art" (as having value) and some to be "porn" (which somehow is a lower disgusting life form).

Maybe it is the logical person in me but I really don't get it. The distinction seems to be purely emotional.

As A Supreme Court Judge said long ago 'I can not define what pornography is but I know it when I see it.' And when you can not define something but you "know" what it is, that is pure emotion not logic.

Ok now we are getting somewhere.

Based on what you have said I'm assuming that the Playboy spreads in its hay day (many of those girls are beautifully posed) might fall into the "art" category if they weren't in the magazine.

Penthouse on the other hand would always be considered "porn" because of the shots they used?

Also any sexual activity scene would also be considered "porn".

Am I close?

This is where it gets tricky. Not all sexual activity is considered porn. It is a thin red line. Speaking from a psychological point of view sexual activity can be seen as part of a relationship and using sex is one thing that could create a deeper bond between two people. Another thing that sex in a relationship does is help create a family. I would say porn is more of like a movie that is planned out with a script. In addition to this you also have different categories which is part of the plan for doing porn. Sure there are many ways of doing sex but I see sex between two people as more instincual and you are exploring. I think artists use their instincts and explore to find the right way to express their vision. The same could be said for porn but I think there is less to no room for creativity when doing porn.

We generally forget that marble statues in Greece and Rome probably were painted - the idea that they lived in a world of whiteness comes from seeing them in galleries and museums, we'd probably have a shock if we were taken back to the way they were really seen. But those pictures bring them to life, they're exquisite!
