Gags would not be appropriate for a crucifixion. The screams of the victim would be a major part of the show.
However, I feel they could be of use for a witch or heretic being burned, since it prevents them saying things the Inquisitors might not want the people to hear.

In bondage play, a gag is very good for increasing the sub's sense of helplessness. Plus, they can scream all they like without fear of the neighbors calling the cops.
