It was hard enough but just bearable ... passing through the streets with the triumph.
Because we were moving, so that each pair of eyes saw us only briefly.
they'd see us only a few moments then we'd be gone.
they'd see us humbled and exposed but not more.
We were still ... going somewhere.
In the arena, that's where it ends
none of us that entered will ever leave
except as ashes, cadavers, bulges in bellies of beasts
none of us can hide from a thousand eyes
seeing everything, from everywhere
Until there's nothing more to be seen,
and they, Romans, go on to live their lives,
while here where ours ended,
blood-soaked sand, sawdust and gravel are cleared away,
Soon the ground is fresh, level, and clean again,
No trace left of those who thought they might defy the Empire...
