Thats their crosses. Who else should carry them? The guards job is hard enough as it is. They have to keep the masses at distanz, they have to hie the condemned on and do you have a clue how heavy those crosses are?

In CF the condemned women get recycled so that they can be executed again, not the crosses. The crosses get re-used. And it´s yours till you die (or are rescued).
