Wonderful artwork! Parsing empathy with my sadism is one of my favorite things about crucifixion! It’s a beautiful tension between those emotions, my heart breaking for her suffering and humiliation while gluing my eyes to her to watch her writhe.
In that way, camera angle has a lot to do with how I view an image. I think I feel the most balance between empathy and sexual excitement in the close up from the side, looking down her arm. I think this one I feel the most tension in her body, how much her muscles must be contracting uncontrollably, yanking on the nail further despite her mental desperation to be still. The way she’s crying upward and how close we are to her face lets us really study how taut her neck is, screaming nonstop and desperate for air. We’re just about at her eye level to see into her soul, while back just enough to leer at her breast and to see her bleeding wrist in the foreground. While we study her beauty and experience her spectrum of emotions, there’s the ever present evidence of her hellish torture on the periphery, always a reminder. We’re close, but not too close to take her suffering out of context of the fetish of the scene.
I also love shots from behind the victim. Her naked curves are undeniable in silhouette around the straight lines of the cross, our minds and imaginations can fill in the sight of her breasts and vulva and diaphragm spasming full of breath and crying from there. We can see the tension across her back and in her legs straining for comfort that will never come, maybe a few drops of blood dripping from the wood. And especially, we get to see what she is seeing. The last scenes her eyes will ever see, be they a jeering crowd or the lonely endless sky. We get to experience her point of view, which she would naturally feel her own nakedness and exposure. To be in her mind feeling that visual rape and endless torture, I think, is an even more special kind of pornographic than to be consuming her as someone standing before her.

There's the P word again... I prefer to consider it for what it really is: a startingly realistic depiction of what might have actually occurred, expertly RENDERED by a superlatively talented, IMAGINATIVE artist, seeking, as all art does, an emotional response.
And empathy? Look up Gustave Gilbert. That none of us would have participated in such an event and would have actively undertaken to prevent it, however "titillating" the idea of female crux may be.
All of which underpins my appreciation of your incredible FANTASTICAL illustrations Jucundus!
