Fit ends for obedient slaves

How should the life of a slave as such come to an end, if they do not commit some grave offense?

So, certainly this forum is full of various ideas of how running away or committing other grave offenses could bring a slave to their painful end. But let's assume that they don't - that they basically do their job and never engage in anything worse than petty misbehaviour. All things must still come to an end... how do you see them doing so? (Master, slave and observer perspectives all welcomed.)

An interesting question, which is exactly the same as all us pet owners face when Tiddles or Rover gets old.

Does our fantasy-land answer about slaves agree with our real-life answer about our pets?

My vote (option #1) applies to a real life scenario. My answer in a fantasy world would be something quite different.
