Samurai is the name for the hereditary warrior caste of feudal Japan. As such, all members of a family, male and female, were referred to as "samurai". Popular cultural depictions have led to the misconception that all samurai were swordsmen and the equally incorrect assumption that all Japanese swordsmen (and women) were samurais.

Most samurai women, at least prior to the Edo Period, would have been trained in some forms of martial arts since they might be called upon to defend themselves and their home. There were some who took part in battle and a few even commanded armies.

The woman in the picture is likely not a samurai. She only has one sword (a samurai carried two swords as a sign of their rank), she's dressed like a peasant, and she doesn't seem very comfortable holding that sword.
