I would suspect that the bible has been dare I say tweaked as its been written and rewritten, translated over the centuries. If you could witness the crucifixion of Jesus and then compair it to the texts I would confidentiality expect a sizeable disparity between the two. Given what we see in the media about religious brutality in the Middle East today it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume he was seriously abused and beaten, scourged to the point he was barely alive when they crucified him thus a quick death wouldn't be surprising.
