The instrument was called 'brodequins' in French.
The tortures were called 'la question'. It was applied to all accused persons, nobles included. Abolished very late, in 1788, by the King Louis XVI, one year before the Revolution.
The scene takes place in the years 1450
The tortured women were entirely nude (censored by the artist)
I read the book when I was very young and I don't remember the details.

Actually there is "old kink" from Hugo era, a lot of real artist did ilustrations some of the very interesting
here you can find few of them, I found Robida's work very exciting
