Having seen the article I referred to quite a few years ago and wondering why would anyone need to sweeten wine I did a little more research and found a very good article explaining exactly what took place. Romans were boiling unfermented grape juice to make sweetener for food flavoring. But found that by boiling it in lead lined kettles the mixture was even sweeter. Thus was born the 1st artificial sweetener, lead acetate caused by lead leaching into the mixture. But fear not ladies, a modern use of lead acetate and water is good to treat sore nipples. I won't ramble on here's the link to the article explaining the chemical reaction, etc.Not quite correct. The Romans were 'cutting' not sweetening their wine with water (which of course was delivered in lead pipes). They considered you a barbarian if you drank your wine straight because you got drunk a lot faster if you didn't cut it. And while the Romans liked their wine they were kind of turned off by drunkenness because you lost your manners when you were drunk.
However consider this, a study not too many years ago on modern CEOs found that the vast majority of them are sociopaths. So you are now a sociopath, who was also a victorious general (as most were) ruling the world with almost unlimited powers amid incredible wealth. Ruling in a time when life was incredible cheap.
We should probably be more surprised at the number of capable sane men who managed to rise to Emperor.
